Strange noises
« on: 05 November 2003, 13:36 »
Got a couple of strange noises, could do with some pointers as to what might be wrong, how serious, how to fix.

1) When reversing there's a tick, tick, tick noise (possibly coming from the gearbox) some one mentioned to me something about idling gear, or lay shaft (haven't a clue what they meant)

2) When moving slowly and turning towards or at full lock, theres a sort of squealling sound.

16v, with PAS (if this helps)

The squeeling sounds like one of your belts is slack or needs replacing.

The belts where replaced just b4 I brought it, so probably slack. Any idea how to work out which one? Suppose I've got to stick me head under the bonnet. As it does it when stationary, suppose should be easy.

The car should be fitted with 2 v-belts (3 if its got aircon). Try turning each belt 90 degrees on its longest run, the one thats loose will turn right round.

Thats the PAS belt, it like pivots on a rack. There is bolt that goes through the middle, if you are lucky you might be able to just tighten that up without touching anything else.
