MK3 Stalling... The story so far!
« on: 04 December 2005, 20:49 »
Hi All.

Been having fun & games with my GTI recently so I thought I'd share the pain...

Started a couple of weeks ago on my 97 8v 2L GTI (AGG engine) when it kept stalling when I took my foot off the accelerator.

Having had problems in the past with a mk2 I cleaned all the breather pipes, & broke the breather valve/bung on top of the rocker cover (DOH, £40 from vw!!!), checked the plugs/leads(sparks ok)/dizzy cap & rotor arm.

Still no luck, so I popped it into the local mechanic (good, honest type) who told me that a couple of wires had shorted out on an exposed part of the clutch cable which in turn blew the coil..... (check that all your wiring is in good conditon & cable-tied out of the way folks!)

All the affected wiring & coil have been replaced but still wont tick over.  So now the ECU has been sent away for testing.

If faultly, it's gonna be painfully!

Will let you all know how it goes.

I have a 97 8v and had similar problems, every time I came to a stop and put the clutch in it stalled, tried all the usual things but no joy. Eventually put it into a auto sparks, diagnostics test came up with no faults but the guy had a Mk4 with a similar fault turned out to be dirty throttle bodies!! might be worth a look.

well weve had our golf on a diagnostics machine today and its come up with the air flow meter is naffed so weve replaced it second hand £55 and the cars stopped cutting out, it maybe worth trying to pick up a cheap one and give it a try as all the mechanics i took it to never thought it would be the hitachi airflow meter,

like i said our car has been a real pain in the arse at junctions stalling and even when drivoing sometimes, glad its sorted now tho! good luck with yours and i hope i aint spoken too soon!

Me Again..  Just thought I'd post an update-

ECU is back from testing with a clean bill of health,  PHEW!!

Alot of burnt-out wiring has been replaced, which goes back to the ignition switch. (It seems that this problem has been brewing for some time)

Also, the Dizzy has to be replaced as it is completely burnt-out!

Haven't got the car back yet but hopefully should be back by the end of the week.

Will keep you posted.

I had the same problem with my 96 8v Colour Concept. After about 3 diagnostics and several hours on the garage workshop floor my problems were indeed traced to "chocked" throttle body.

This has been cleaned out and the car goes like a dream again.

Well at long last the light at the end of the tunnel seems brighter (no, it's not an on coming train!).

It's seems that when the original fault occured, the wiring shorted, coil/distributor blew, that it also fried the TPS on the throttle valve.  VW wanted £250 for a new one but after a quick call round to GSFP (which would take a week from Germany) & ECP (who had one on their shelf & was with me by 10am the next day!).

Part number for the Thottle Valve Control is: 430440430  £168+p&p+vat (so saved about £50) & part number for the Gasket is: 028129748  £1.97 from the local  VW/Audi parts department.

They're going to give it a final run-through tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be zooming along again soon!

Finally it's all sorted!

So here's a rundown:

ECU Tested- OK
New Ignition Relay
New Dizzy/Rotor/Cap/Plugs/Leads
New Coil
Half a ton of burnt out wiring
New Thottle Valve
New Breather Valve (which I broke when I was clearing out the gunk!)

Well, the bill is heavy but most of it is down to the Auto Electrician.

AND I'M BACK ON THE ROAD! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Happy Christmas everybody!  :santa:
