Heater Only Works On Top Setting?
« on: 03 December 2005, 15:48 »
Hi guys, for some reason my heater only works on its top setting, has anyone got any idea's?

And also sometimes no matter how fast or slow I'm driving when I do put my heating on, it makes the car judder, getting abit worried about it now.

Thanks

Sounds to me like the fan motor is knack'd. When you say it makes the car judder, do you mean the car vibrates, or the engine judders?

The engine judders, its as though it dies due to lack of power then starts almost instantly.

Yeah, could be the motor with a high current drain... Whip the bugger out and check it over. I remember taking the motor pod out a while back to get the leaves and crud out. It's not too bad a job but to actually get the the electrical innards you'll need some wit and perseverance. There's a load of funny clips holding the pod together. You might be better off sourcing one from a scrappy first......

The resistor is faulty, it is mounted on the motor housing, replace it.
Does the engine judder at idle when you turn on the motor or when you are driving it?

When you say the resistor is that the gummings begind the actual controls?

And sometimes it will judder if I turn the heat on when its idling.

No, there is a resistor module on the fan motor housing, this is under the passenger front shelf.
If you only have problems with judder at idle but not when driving, then there probably should be some sort of valve that will increase the idle speed when electrical items are turned on, what is your engine code, does it have an isv?

If your car has got a pollen filter, it might be that the filter is blocked up - that is what happened with my Mk 4, and replacing that solved the problem.

Not sure if the Mk 3s have them on though...
