  • Mk2 Golf GTI 8V '91 LONDON
Hello everyone,

I just bought a MK 2 GTI 8V in graphite grey, only had it for 2 days and I frickin love it!!! Its not my first mk2, I ahd a 1.3 that served me well through the gloomy years of crazy insurance... but now i'm old enough to afford a GTI at long last!!!

The car seems to be in really good condition inside and out, there are a couple of things that need sorting out and I thought you guys might have some suggestions..

1. the passenger rear side suspension is knocking (hoping this is just a new shock thats needed?)
2. there is oil leaking from the top of the cylinder head but it doesn't seem too heavy although there is a faint smell of burning oil - how serious is this?

also what should a do/have checked aside from a normal service to make sure she's sweet and is running at full performance? was thinking of having an induction kit fitted. is there anything i should replace aside from basic plugs, oil/air filter etc?

and finally i'm based in wimbledon, London. does anyone know any good garages in SW london that can help me out? i'm new to the area and don't wanna be raped by some cowboy!

thanks!!! photos to follow!!!

Welcome to the forum

Oil is most likely the rocker cover gasket - cheap and easy

Best thing to do with the suspension is have a look at it, should be pretty obvious if its leaking...
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!

Welcome.

I'm just down the road from you, and found that there's a garage in Southfields (actually a Skoda dealer) that seems pretty decent. Got my MOT done there in July, and they didn't complain about the stone chip in my windscreen or the airbag light constantly being on. And only charged me for 15mins labour that they needed to adjust front bearings.
They are H L Austin (www.hlaustin.co.uk)

Also there's a garage in Putney called the German Motor Company that specialises in selling and repairing VWs, BMW and Merc I think. Not used it though.

Hope that helps.

hello and welcome to the forum!!

like daz said the leak is probably a knackered rocker cover gasket, the suspension could be a number of things and a decent set up (if you decided to renew the lot) is only about £200 for lowered shox and matching springs. and don't bother with an induction kit. all they do is make a lot of noise with no benefit. just bin your old filter and get a decent panel filter from k&n or someone like that.
