Help manifolds
« on: 01 December 2005, 21:05 »
hi guys, just need a bit of help with my manifolds, im trying to put a 4 into 1 manifold on my driver, and i cant get the exhaust manifold off

i think i have to take the inlet off, so iv got managed to get 4 of the six allen key bolt out and with teh exhaust manifold iv managed to get 6 out of the 8 out

im only stuck with the 2 inlet bolts and 2 exhaust studs that are inbetween both manifolds?

can i get the exhaust manifold off with out taking the inlet off??  or how can i get to these bolts i can only feel 2 out of the 4?

cheers guys

your far better off getting the inlet off to get to the exhaust, im guessing its the middle two bolts on the inlet that you havent done, they are bastards to find and if your tool falls apart like mine did  and the bits get stuck between the manifolds.... grrr, if your having trouble getting those two out then i found you can actually feel for the one on the left (as you look into the bay)if you slip your fingers in from the side and guide your tool towards it(i used an allenkey bit on a socket on a 1/4 inch extension bar) and the one on the right is just a bastard and youve got to feel for it for ages until you find it, i had to do it to get that o`ring changed, once thats off tho youl have loads of room, the exhuast manifold bolts tend to be dead rusty mind, i dont see why they didnt have the two manifolds as one part..., hope ive helped abit, im sure others will be able to tell you more, im not exactly mr no it all  good luck

A long time since i've worked on one of these engines, but i'm pretty sure you need to remove the inlet manifold to get at the exhaust manifold.
Those inlet manifold bolts are a sh!t

ive done this years ago, i think it involved a long allen key and a long probing finger  i remember it being a b!tch of a job because theres barely any room between the manifolds but it can be done

Give yourself a fighting chance and soak them in WD40. A bit of heat would also help if you can get it.

Good Luck

The nuts will almost always be completly fused to the studs and will come out complete, which is handy as you'll want to replace them with new studs and copper nuts. ;)
But on a carb engine the o'ring in the inlet manifold will almost always have been leaking coolant onto the exhaust manifold and the 2 nuts beneath, handily one of those nuts is the hardest to get to!  I managed to get 7 of the nuts/studs out no bother, but the last one was completly rusted solid into the head, in the end I had to use my dremel to cut the head off the stud and then had to take the head off & drill the stud out.
Try a stud extractor first, but it just sheared off when I tried :(

Don't worry if you end up having to take the head off, it really isn't that difficult and actually works to your advantage as it gives you tons of room to slip the downpipe in without having to drop the subframe, and also gives you the opportunity to clear out all the waterways, mine were almost all clogged up and my engine ran much cooler afterwards :)

Let us know how you get on with it!
