Hi - Newbie and need some advise on Mk5 choice!
« on: 01 December 2005, 13:38 »
Hi - I'm just about to get a new company car and have a choice of the Golf 2ltr GT TDI or if I put a little cash of my own a GTI FSI Turbo. Now - I have not driven either of them yet and wanted to know your thoughts on both if possible. Looking on the VW web page they both look nice, the derv is £38 a month cheaper on company car tax for me and I'd have to pay nothing, but it won't go like the GTi! Are the diesels any good after a re-map? I am aware of the re-map companies as I currently drive a VAG car with the 1.8T whch is re-mapped....

Now what about the options? On the diesel I can choose alloys and multichanger, I was thinking of the grand prix style alloys, and 6 disc in the centre console. Are the strandard stereo/speakers any good or is the stereo upgrade a good idea? Unfortunately I'd have no options available on the Gti, but are they uprated anyway?...

I hate decisions, especially as I'll have to live with it for 3 years! Thanks in advance.

have not driven gt tdi, but i would go for the gti. i own one and have been very happy. i have a standard(no extras) blue graphite and can not complain. the quality of the car and handling make it a safe choice!!!!

i would advise gti if i were in your shoes!

good luck

p.s- if you pick the gti, you will have a long wait

To answer some of your questions;

When I was looking to buy my GTI I managed to get a GTI & a GT TDI for a day a piece to test drive and assess - not an easy task. My conclusions were that both cars were very easy to drive & live with.  Both have very flexible engines and from the inside, if you ignore the obvious styling differences, in everyday use (i.e. not trashing along your favourite stretch of country road) the most obvious difference between the GTI & the TDI is the extra refinement of the petrol engine over the diesel. That's not to say the diesel is at all noisy, you only really notice it when you accelerate briskly.

The GTI is undoubtedly a sharper drive (largely thanks to it's steering & suspension set ups) and predictably the petrol engine enjoys being revved (& is far more rewarding when driven hard) much more than the diesel. However there is a considerable difference in their thirst for go-juice, the diesel will do 48MPGish, where as the GTI will do 32MPGish, same driver, same conditions.

In fairness neither car is better than the other in the right circumstances, it all depends on what sort of driving you're doing and how much you want to pay the extra for the GTI & it's inevitable extra fuel costs as to which you should go for.

For me it had to be the GTI because I live in a rural area & I do a lot of cross-country driving (fast, sweeping mountain roads where you can really push a car along). However if I lived in the middle of a large town & I did loads of long distance Motorway driving, I'd probably have gone for the TDI just because of the economics.

You pays your money & takes your choice.

Hmmm, decisions! Sensible head says "Gttdi" and non-sensible head says blow the extra money and get the "Gti"! On one hand I could spend 3 years thinking, I wish I got the gti, on the other I could be thinking I could have saved £60 or so a month for 3 years....

HI

I have an '55 GTI and my missus has a '55 GT-TDI.

The GTI never fails to put a smile on your face whilst returning 30 mpg.

The GT TDi is very good and returns 40 mpg but is a little boring!

Go for the GTi - you know it makes sense!
