Hello, new to this list and to Golfs. I have just bought myself a Golf Mk2 8v GTI (1991) to use while I am resurecting my Mini 1000. Having driven a few miles in the Golf and done a little work (renewed the timing belt and drive belts) I must admit that it might be hard to get back to the Mini project.
Other than a badly adjusted throttle cable (had spent a few miles wondering why people made such a fuss about GTIs until I found that problem) the only other problems I have now is a faulty Cobra Alarm System, No Central Locking or Interior Lights (suspect that these are related to the Alarm) and the Front Fog Lights don't work.
The bulbs in the Fogs are OK and there is a good earth connection. The rear fog works on the second detent.
When I removed the foglight switch from the Fascia I found a Scotchlock connector (horrible things which always lead to trouble in my experience) connecting the feed wire (grey colour) to the dash illumination bulb and the output (white/yellow to the fogs). The white yellow wire had been cut through. I can't think why anyone would do this. I think it would make the fogs come on with the dash illumination which makes some sense until the little bulb blows under the strain of the current required.
What I really wanted to know was where I can find a good wiring diagram so I can check the electrics out properly. I don't want to just reconnect the wires and end up blowing all the electrics. The ones in the Haynes manual don't cover GTI models thoroughly and seem to be incomplete. Are there better manuals out there?
Can anyone tell me which of the relays is for the Front Fogs on a '91 8v GTI? Haynes says number seven but there is nothing in that slot on my car.
Thanks,
Max
