« on: 29 November 2005, 19:26 »
Hello all, im a newbie to the water cooled scene, owned beetles for a bit, but needed some power, and reliablitly, so bought myself a mk2 gti, 8v. i am well pleased. few issues with it tho.
the boot wont open... well it opened once, struggled to shut it, and now it wont open - the buttons stuck in, will come out with a screw driver but wont do anything else.....

brakes are rubbing on the passenger rear disk..

atm that is it.. so very happy! seems very very fast

what can i do to give it even more ooomphh!?

cheers!
Si

Welcome to Golf GTI's

I think you might find that because Golfs (like loads of other hatchbacks) suck up so much dirty behind them, the rear lock seizes up from time to time. Try squirting some WD40 into the & around the lock cylinder to see if that frees it up. Failing that take the lock cylinder out and give it a good clean in some WD40 and see if that does the trick.

From my experience it's normally the o/s hand brake spindel that's the cause of the problems with rear brakes on Mkii's, but I can well believe the n/s can just as easily play up.

I've just checked & according to the Haynes manual, assuming everything is working OK (the pistons not seized), the rear brakes should be set to have a clearance of 1.0mm between the the outer pad and the caliper. If not you need to wind the piston in (or out) until you get the right amount of clearance
