mk2 16v airbox
« on: 28 November 2005, 14:49 »
Hi all,

hopefully this is a dead simple question... I have a 1991 mk2 16v and need a new air filter to go into the airbox, I don't need anything fancy, but started having a quick lunch time look through ebay and have now confused myself :undecided:

Did the design of the airbox change during production of the 16v mk2? One panel filter I saw for sale said it fitted both a mk1 and a mk2 16v, but I think my mk1 air box is shorter than my mk2....?!

If the design did change please can you tell me when, also if anyone has a good k+n kicking around for my car then please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Rob, your 16v will have the same airbox as mine...they changed them in 1990 to a larger one. I bought a brand new k&n panel filter from gsf for about £33 and drilled the airbox

Excellent stuff, I just wanted to be sure before I buy something that's wrong for my car! I've just been given another mk2 16v but it's a 88 model so I wondered if I might be able to plunder an airfilter off of that, but alas it seems not!

Cheers for your help.

Doesn't matter greatly but I think it was late '89 rather than '90 when the design/shape changed because we were sold the wrong filter for our March '89 16v on one occasion............

Sounds about right to me, I think for one reason or another, in addition to the usual model year changes, VW changed a number of mechanical things around then on 16v mkIIs.

Another was the rear the brake caliper design to try & stop the hand brake from seizing up - I've lost track of the number of times in the last 15 years I've had to crawl under our 16v to free the o/s one off

Change them for mk3 ones then. Or even mk4 ones if you get braided lines.
