Best service parts?
« on: 04 November 2003, 09:32 »
Hi

My 8v 1991 Gti is just about to be serviced at 108,000.

My Dad is carrying out the service (he's a mechanic) and I want to know which are the best parts to use.

Which parts/brands would VW use? I'm thinking spark plugs/oil filter/air filter/oil etc. Are the VW parts necessarily the best?

I know that people rate K & N air filters for instance, are these much better, and what spark plugs do people rate?

Thanks in advance.

VW use bosch spark plugs, which are known for good quality. A genuine vw oil filter will also be best. K&N air filters are good as you never have to replace it, only clean it and re-oil it every 60k. In general the best parts are genuine parts from VW. I have tried saving money in the past and it doesn't always pay in the long term. Consumables are very reasonably priced these days at VW, you might be surprised!

I will certainly check out VW.

Any other places to try? Do German & Swedish sell these genuine parts? (ie the good Bosch plugs etc.)

Also what type of Oil is recommended?

GSF used to be good a few years back, but these days they are awful. I've heard Euro Car Parts are cool, but i haven't actually tried them.

I have only had eurocarpparts let me down once (new headight switch for my 90 8v, some mupet had fitted one with the incorrrect dash dimmer, so I had no dash lights). Everything either off of the shelf or next day, prices very good as well. :D
