Engine swap 2.O 16v engine 6a 9a.
« on: 27 November 2005, 15:26 »
If i was to go either route 6a 9a in my '90 16v, will my Magnex s/s manifold and system and samco hoses, and rad still all fit? (there all new) also if i was to buy a pair of  cams what do i buy 6a/9a or KR's? Im confused as it says refit existing cams or inlet cam  :undecided:

Also what do you reckon these engines fetch? Need to do it now before all my money gets sucked into a house

Wont be fitting just yet but would like it hanging off hoist cleaning it and tinkering with it, more like taking it apart and asking you guys how to fix it again??

I did it the cheap way:

Go for an Audi 80 16v as they are more common/cheaper than Passats or Corrados
My 1991 16v Quattro was £67.00 off yeBay and i simply swapped the entire engine over.
Your stainless exhaust manifold (lucky sod!) will fit and the standard inlet manifold bolts straight on. The cooling sytem is identical too!

As for cams i took both out of my 1.8 16v and put them in the Audi (6a) engine. Apparently only one is different but best swap both to be sure

The only problem i have found is the head have different temperature sensors- look at the distributor end of your head and there are some leccy connectors around the cooling pipe- my Audi engine had these in different places and one works the choke, another the ecu so make sure you note what goes where (i didnt, have guessed and the choke isnt quite right yet!) Its not tricky, and the Haynes manual explains the wiring colours anyway! Obviously this doesnt matter if you swap heads over, so maybe this is the better route (and you can check the bores and fit a new head gasket for peace of mind)

As for price, look for a short MOT 16v Audi 80 or Passat estate as they are less likely to be ragged (all will be high mileage though, mines done 160k) and after all, no one wants ropey old cars around xmas! I reckon £150 should get you either a car or a handily-sized scrapyard engine.

Thanks for the class reply

Will be looking for a complete car then at that money,if I swap the heads over wont it still be a 1.8?
Great news the stuff i've just bought mine will fit new engine phew! Right its the whole 6a/9a engine then!! I'll be looking in all the local papers and freeads for a suitable donor vehicle!!

I remember years ago '91 92 driving a Passat 2.0 16v estate when they must have been fairly new, and remember thinking bloody hell this is seriously quick!!

I think the extra capacity is in the stroke (up & down) of the pistons which is why the heads can be easily swapped- its the bottom end that decides the litres!
The extra valves in the 16v head mean the pistons are different between an 8v and 16v bottom end and this is why you cannot put a 1.8/2.0 16v head on a 2.0 8v block...as i found

I drove my £67 Audi Quattro 16v from Gloucester to Devon...it broke down twice but i guess you get what you pay for!!

Class you got it for £67 !! So what year you is your Audi? Its got to be done the person I bought my car from had just had the Head rebuilt so I maybe better using that one? Also been looking at Clubgti and they've got some FAQ on this subject so will be reading up for a few days on different tuning mods.

Would like to do swop at work over xmas break, but it'll probably be easter as i'd like to fettle the donor engine with cams, flywheel etc .. and maybe a small detailing

The truth be known i'll be so excited i'll fit at as soon as!!!

Worth the wait...especially when you boot it in 3rd!!

i think putting your head on a donor block is the best idea especially as you know its been rebuilt- also you wont have any wiring worries as none of the damn temperature switches change!
i was pretty jammy with my audi, it was a 1991 80 quattro, was listed on ebay as raced'n'ragged (his listing shot was it at a trackday!!) and he was glad i only wanted the engine!

there are some good threads on here, type in 16v 2.0 conversion on the search topics

Where are you based?

Cool you getting your car/engine like that

I'm in Brighton.... but we have a company vehicle flat bed that i could collect a suitable engine if not too far away, so dont mind travelling!!!

Will do a search and see what it finds...

 Thanks for replying
