thats interesting topher, when i had my MOT done back in october my boyfriends dad's mate said my steering rack had a tiny bit of play init, but not much and would probably need replacing for the next MOT, steering racks are expensive tho arnt they?? although ive seen people talking about putting the audi TT rack on the golf so you have sports steering, but if its actually any good, who knows..

and oh know not the treaded MAF problem lol

golfpro, the 4 mo's are nice, my mate had one and its bloody quick, you must buy it!!! lol

Just diff ratios - less steering wheel movement to car move etc.

Doubt its the rack itself, more likely track rod ends and they arent too expensive! Bout £20 each.

A rack from a motor factors will cost about £100

I wouldn't have thought it would be your rack if it's only at high speeds  :undecided:

I had a knackered steering rack one of my old cars, but that used to wander about all the time. Not just motorway speeds. Also, when they do go they tend to snatch when you turn, it feels like nothings happening and then all of a sudden your turning..quite scary actually

Len - That sounds a bit cheap for a power steering rack...
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!

christ then iv got no chance with only one year, an accident and a fwd v6 powered monster. Tho i am in guernsey where crime is low and milage is minimum. suppose il just get a quote and take it from there. my 1.4 mk3 was 1200 quid last year as id not long had my accident. That was the best i could find too! runs out in april tho so may aswell wait til then and see what happens

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

Now come on Sugar I know you arnt that girlie surely!

They are just a flexible end to either side of the steering rack, to allow for suspension movement. Its usually the outer end of this rod that wears, where its connected to the wheel hub.

Was going on my 405, that cost £80 exchange about 3 years ago. And I did say Motor Factors prices not VAG!!!!
So would have thought a Golf one could be bought for 100-120.

Power steering dont make much difference to the price - its the pump that costs not the rack.

i did find when booting it off last night trying to keep up with the rice burners  :embarassed: that when i accelerated hard in first gear, i whacked in to 2nd, the wheels spun   but it pulled hard to the right when it was spinning in 2nd, now would this be a symptom of whats wrong or was it something like toque steer??

lol Len, i know alot for a women about cars but i don't know everything

Torque steer is when going around bends. Not straight line.
