I don't think anyone would suggest NOT doing the cambelt at 80k. I'm just gambling - plus the fact i won't be keeping the car long. However, officially it is 120k.... but car companies (esp Peugeot) have been known to stretch this to make the cars more appealing to fleets as this costly service won't be needed.
I believe a snapped cambelt is quite a regular occurence for low mileage 306 gti's
Your not wrong there!!! I owned one previously to the Golf, & am still a member on
www.306gti6.com. There was never a shortage of cambelt snap stories on there! There was loads of cases of 30-40k mile snaps/water pump/tensioner/idle roller failure, when Peugeot recommended a cambelt ONLY change at 60k!!! Bloody French!
Luckily, it never happened to me though, (The cambelt kit wasn't replaced til about 60k on mine, so I was prob a bit lucky! A lot of people had probs with tapping from badly rebuilt cylinder heads!
I'm personally going to get my Golf's belt, w.p., tensioners etc done at 60k, for peace of mind..... Not worth risk of £1000+ worth of head damage, IMO.
