wow...
« on: 20 November 2005, 19:16 »
Hooray, have finally got to drive my 2litre valver

-1989 Mk2 Golf 16v
-Audi 6a 16v engine
-KR cams
-50mm inlet manifold
-standard airfilter + exhaust
-8v gearbox

Crikey I didnt expect it to go so well- its flippin rampant and for the equivalent cost of a full stainless exhaust...

Overhauled a 106gti on dual carriageway test run despite his 200yd headstart and hopelessly outraced him 3 times before he gave up, totally bemused
Am gonna enjoy this...

Thats class that you have done it and it runs ok .. Nice one!!! (Where's the clapping Smiley)

So your above list is all you've changed/bought?? And you have gone the 6a route as everyone usual goes 9a any major problems with the 6a route apart from changing the inlet cam??

The only new parts i fitted were an oil pump, sump baffle and clutch friction plate. I fitted an new oil pump as the 16v heads need lots of lube; the plastic sump baffle broke (brittle plastic clips) and the new friction plate was because the 8v gearbox has different splines to the 16v box...this last detail i discovered after putting it all back together, fring it up and trying to find a gear...crunch!!
I think the 9a/6a engines are actually identical but the inline Audi mounting means the sump, oil cooler and inlets are different hence giving it another name!
All i did was swap the sump pans and rotate the oil cooler by 90degrees and everything else just bolted in place.

As for the cams i swapped both as i couldnt remember which one was different

Never had torque steer before in a Golf!

I thought i would fit an 8v box to improve economy at motorway cruise...5th does drop the revs a little and this box is quicker, smoother and quieter than my worn 16v box too!
doubt it will affect economy though as car refuses to travel below 85mph..

As she holds water (well most of it..) has clean oil and runs smooth I reckon its time to go rolling roading and get the thing setup by a professional mechanic

And Si, will look out for you on Tiv Link Road- i travel it most days...look for a noisy muddy blur!
How was the Taunton meet? (and whens the next one!)

I did that to some women thinking she was big time in an Audi TT, i think it was one of those 150bhp front wheel drive ones, she looked confused as a 15 year old valver screamed past her brand spanking new sports car!
