What oil for 1.8T
« on: 20 November 2005, 18:38 »
Anyone know what rating oil I should use to top up my 2001  1.8T? its not on longlife service schedules and I've mislaid my service book (ISTR it waffled on about VW codes etc) anyone know in plain English? i.e 10W 40 etc?

I did buy some today from the local car spares place, but when i got home i realised they had sold me long life, which may not 'mix' well with the basic stuff in my engine.

Cheers for any help

You probably need Quantum synta silver from VAG (but check with them first) but you can also get this slightly cheaper from your local GSF.
......now officially dubless.

Thanks,  - i was hoping there may be a viscosity rating as my local VW / GSF is a 30 minute drive. Hoping just to get something from the local motor factors.

i ended up putting in 10/30 as per Haynes manual. I am sure the thinner stuff is better, but its due a service in 3k so it'll survive on the cheapy 10/30 stuff.

cheers

the specs are actually 10/40 or 15/40, VW 500.00 and 501 (i think) which is the kind of stuff you would put in your ford Ka

My local Stealer parts dept reccommended the stuff in the gold coloured container for Turbo's. Fullly synth & I'm sure it stated 10 W 40.

I looked at the silver one, but can't remember what that one said..... I'm think it was also 10 W 40, but only SEMI-synthetic.... Could be wrong, though.

just checked my service book again and it says:

Multi - grade high lubricity oils  Spec  VW 500 00 or VW 502 00

High lubricity oils                   Spec   VW 501 01

I'm sure the Magnatex oil bottle for 5w -40  quotes these figures and also says it's suitable for VW engines.

I think if you're putting thinner stuff in, then it can only be good. Going much thicker than recommended may affect performance - I suppose if you go too thin, then maybe it could lose more oil in a high mileage (loose) engine?

Anyway, topped up now, no need to worry...

Cheers.,
