1 off prob ?
« on: 18 November 2005, 17:10 »
Hi all,,, i really hope someone knows the answer here: I have an n reg mk3 8v 2.0 gti engine code AGG . Their is one post on this whole site related to this problem about three yrs ago.    When i have the ignition on position 1 the throttle body butterfly opens and closes very slightly along with a clicking sound, coming from the stepper motor (sounds a bit like a relay opening). If you hold the throttle open the clicking and butterfly movement stops.

Another problem is that when i start in the mornings the revs either drop out completely or to about 400 rpm unless i hold it with the gas, but it only does this untill the engine becomes warm, maybe 3 mins after starting. I dont know whether this is linked to the first issue here ???. I have fitted a new throttle body along with a new coolant temp sensor and the air filter is brand new. This engine does not have an idle stabilization valve, because alot of people suspected this. I havn't touched anything else yet. It has been plugged into vag com, but no faults showed up. Its been to 6 different mechanics lol, who kindly kicked me out the door. .  I've spent ages trying to track the fault, and am about to give up.   Appreciate ya help on this one thanks DAN

Hi mate

I'm the guy with the rev limiter problem! Managed to solve this one though, and its easy!
The throttle cable is incorrectly adjusted.

First of all I recommend you give the throttle body a quick clean. Just take of the air intake, spay in a bit of WD40 and scrub around removing as much crap as possible (this might not be needed but its good to do).

To adjust the cable as required, turn on the ignition so that you can here the beeping/clicking sound. Working on top of the engine remove the clip which holds the throttle cable in place (about 4 inches from where it attatches to the throttle body, on the black plastic grooved bit - no idea what its called).

Tighten until the valve on the throttle body begins to open (should still be beeping at this point if not just turn the ignition off and on and it should start again for you), then gradually release until the beeping completely stops. Replace the clip and away you go - it'll be like a new car. If you go to far it'll keep on beeping, and it took me a couple of attempts a couple of days apart, but should get there in the end. Any problems let me know.

Cheers

hi mate its dan with this clicking problem. Ive tried to tighten the cable but the valve has to be open for the clicking to stop, but then the car idles at 2500 rpm. how did you tighten it, then release it to make the clicking stop ?? . The only way i can get it to stop is if i hold the valve open about 6 mm. ??  cheers dan

Did you loosen it all the way first, so the valve is completely closed and there's loads of slack on the cable??

yeah my valve is  closed  when the car idles. the only way i can stop it clicking is to adjust the cable so that the valve stays open about 6mm at idle. But it is way to high like 2000 rpm. i might have a different engine to you ,mine is AGG ?      cheers dan
