Confused about the Dreaded Pierburg - 2E or 2E2, that is the question.

Hi everyone, i've read the numerous posts about Pierburg carbs, as im having lots of the usual problems with my 1991 Golf Clipper.

Its a 1.8, but when I've looked on the side of the Carb to check the model, it says 2E, rather than 2E2 that everyone elses seems to have.

Im not sure what this means, but I was trying to get a replacement WEBER kit for it, from GSF, but I suppose it wont fit.

When i was having trouble with my mums carb i was told to bin the pieburg as they're sh!te I have the Weber kit you speak of and an electric fuel pump to finish the job, it only did about 500 miles before the car got scrapped - make me an offer, i'll be glad to get something back on it

I didn't know you could get a different type of fuel pump 

I ended up having my return to tank fuel line blocked to get the weber to run right. However, this has a bad side effect as you get a lot of black smoke when you start it  :embarassed: I would imagine a better fuel pump could be the answer and I could unblock the return to tank. Where can you get the electic fuel pumps from, are they hard to fit?

Hmm where to start...

The stock fuel pump is operated by a cam inside the engine which moves a lever on the pump, i discovered this after fitting a new pump which didn't pump fuel when on the car but worked perfectly.  after several had people looked at the car (i only really know GTi's) we came to the conclusion that the cam had worn down and would need replacing, an electric fuel pump was a much easier solution

The pump was easy to get hold of from volkspares in sydenham (been used for years on beetles & t2's) and was about £50, Theres an ignition controlled feed on the peipurg carb which i used to power it (so power only on when key turned ) with a new but original spec return thingy plumbed in for good measure - it was a glorious moment watching the fuel filter fill up after nearly a year of seeing the tiniest drop which dissapeard the moment you touched the accelerator

The car ran sweet til it failed its MOT on bodywork  it wasn't getting used by my mum and the tax had run out so i had to send it to the crusher  (i finally got to nick the chrome grill though  )
