You could try disconnecting the positive supply to the fuel pump and sticking an ammeter in series........see what kind of current draw you're getting. A higher than average current draw would mean the pump is working harder either due to a blockage or wear.
Although you've cleaned it all out, it may still have picked up some crud from somewhere, thats now found its way to the inlet strainer of the lift pump or the main pump. I'd definately do the current check and check those strainers before spending on a new pump.

Finally got around to having a look at the car, there is power to the pump while turning the engine over, but the pump is,nt buzzing, disconnected the pump from the tank supply and got covered in petrol, so I guess the lift pump is working, though when I spun it over again nothing came from the tank, perhaps I drained it, so wheres the best place  to get a pump from ?, most places are asking ?70 +. any ideas.

Check the price at VW stealer, they have dropped. Got a main pump for a pb golf last year for ?35. Or try Euro car parts, GSF , links on home page.

Thanks for the opinions, carb pumps are a lot cheaper, injection ones are all ?70+, unless someone has a good used one to lend me ?.

If its definately the pump then I'm afraid you have no choice but to take the hit in the wallet.
