i had to get the missus's mk2 mot'd on monday morning... i tried ringing round a few local garages to see if i could find one that hadn't gone over to the computerised system. i had my *cough* rover tested 2 weeks ago at a garage local to me, and they hadn't gone over, but the new computer had just been installed when i took it back for the retest. the tester told me they were damned unhappy about the new system and were just expecting lots of hassle from it. also, they reckoned they 'had' to charge the full £44 for a test, instead of a few quid less so they were undercutting the big dealers and tyre centres.
luckily, my missus's golf passed it's test on the first attempt, but i got an advisary notice on the state of the front discs (new grooved and drilled discs, £21 on egay!! ). the tester told me that if it had failed on the discs, and i'd left the car with them, they could have done a free retest if they'd got the discs done that day. all very well and good, but what if they couldn't get the discs that day, or didn't have the time to fit them.
this new system is just another pain in the ass, but like all systems, ways round the rules will emerge. support your local small garage, and they'll look after you!

Well went into the garage last night...........drove out with a new mot but £629 lighter in the old wallet department for the pleasure!!! AND the heatshield on my old downpipe disintegrated when they removed it so I had to order one today. Europarts don't seem to have them so I had to phone the local stealership, that lightened my wallet a further £41.15!!!

I also enquired about new aluminium heatshields under the floor as mine are looking a bit shabby.........£46 for the one in the tunnel, £116 for the one under the rear seat!!!! Sod that, they can wait for a while.

my mot has been moved forward to 4pm tomorrow, i reckon the brakes might just scrape through, only a bit spongy if you really slam the pedal down, but who needs to do that with 280mm discs ? looks like a piece of front brake pad has broken off in the corner, should get away with that. i have no side repeaters.. the horn has packed up.. passenger window doesnt work (is that a requirement anyway ?) ahhh this should be fun !

goodridge braided hoses and a full disc/pad set will be ordered at the weekend regardless.

You might get away with the missing chip off your brake pad as they only really have a quick check to see how thick they are.
You'll definately need to get the bottom of the horn problem.
Almost certain that windows aren't checked in an mot so that should be fine.
I thought side repeaters would be a failure if the car was made after 1985 as it must have them after then??? Anybody sure on that one???

normally the thing with extra lights is that if they're there they must work..  if they're just not there then i _think_ it'll be ok..

for eaxmple.. i know that if there are fogs on the front they must work.. if theres just blanking plate it doesnt matter..

This has been discussed many a time... My garage told me they didnt check them, so it would pass if they werent working/missing. But, other people have told me that their garage has failed them on it. I think its just the garage trying to make a bit more money out of you.... i use a good garage so they dont try and do that  They always tell me, and normally i can say, oh, i'll fix that myself dont worry!
