I'm sure my station still does a free retest. I'll have to check. The Mk2 needs a ticket so I want to be able to take it back, having done the work myself, if when it fails

Rich - If your local test station is still on the non-computerised system then the free re-test will be down to their discretion as usual. You can still take the car home and do the work yourself but the rules state it would then need a full re-test at full price.

Dinx - I think they started trials of it in April this year and now the scheme has been accepted and put into place. It's just a case of the time it takes them to install the computers at all 18500 testing stations until all garages are running the new system.

I was gonna chat to the guy at the garage doing my car later to see what they think about it.

Here's a thought I had:
Suppose a garage has 6 mots booked in one day and they all fail (it could happen) and all of the owners decide to leave them there as they don't want to pay the full retest fee. Now not only has the garage suddenly got 6 cars to store but they also have 6 unplanned cars to squeeze into their schedule for repairs. Most garages I use are normally fully booked up for at least a few days in advance so surely this will cause a total nightmare.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

My mate had his MOT done in our local station and not only had it definately moved over to the new system but it failed and he took it back for a free retest. I'll double check, but I'm sure that was the case. Maybe its still down to the garage whether they actually charge the full amount for the retest..............or maybe that was still the trial period and it has changed now. As I say I'll double check with my mate that does my MOT's.

I don't know how true it is but I have read on web that some MOT stations are considering claiming compensation from VOSA because of the new computerized system going down and so they are having to use the emergency procedures to do the tests   therefore bu66ering up their daily work schedules  .  :undecided:

I had to pay for a retest for some items that I considered to be very minor, all because I needed the car and couldn't leave it at the MOT place. They also didn't have time to sort the stuff out - conveinient. Really annoying.

most places are aupposed to be on the computerised system now, altho as with some garages (e.g.t he one form my house) they have the equipment but the people who r coming to fit theres, are due any day (prob next week..., week after, next month... next year) so its luck of the draw! best thing is to get a pre m.o.t check done.. then they will tell u roughly what needs doin (if anything) and then have th test done, usually costs u 1/2 price of test at the most, although, this is also at the garages discretion!

(hope it passes - took me 3 times to get golf to pass when i was puttin it back on the road!! )
