Mk2 ryder, now blows but only cold air...
« on: 11 November 2005, 14:06 »
Hello all, im new here so hi!

I have a Mk2 Ryder (J Reg 1991 or 1992)  which is needing a bit of work, currently on the list and top priority is the blower / heater combo in the car. Orginally there was no lights on the heater dial and no air blowing out.....however after a trip to my local scrap yard Albert Loom's i now have lights on my heater dial and a working Blower unit......

Only thing is..the air seems to be cold which is not good at the moment as i work in the peak district and when i finish it cold dark and wet and i cant demist!

Please if you are going to reply bare in mind im new to cars and im crap at practical stuff although after hours with my haynes manual and lots of swearing and numerous cups of tea i did manage to change my front brake pads!
Please help my white Ryder not be a Fridge...

cheers!

lol

Right the most common cause of no hot air is the bypass valves giving up the ghost. If you look behind the engine on the right hand side where the water pipes pass through the bulk head you will see 2 plastic valves with arrows on. Your best bet is to take them out and replace them with a bit of copper pipe. But before you do all that make sure your coolant level is topped up as this can also cause a lack of heat.

The valves are in there because the origional heater matrix's were prone to bursting sometimes when the pressure in the system builds up. So the valves simply divert the water past the matrix when the pressure builds up.

But the problem now is that you can no longer get hold of these valves new and they are like rocking horse poo in scrap yards. Even if you do get an old set from a scrap yard you run the risk of these ones being buggered too.

So simply bypass it. If y matrix blows then replace it for a stronger golf mk3 version.

Ok ill fill it up now for the journey home.... if i give it some revs on the way back that should be enough to make it warm and if it isnt ill try replacing the valves with copper pipe. (what kind of copper pipe do i need? and can i just buy it from B&Q?)

Its odd i dont know if its just me but although i say it blows cold on the hot setting i suspect its slightly colder on the cold setting if you know what i mean....

thanks all!!
