6 Months ago we bought a 1996 gti privately. Not sure whether we got a lemon but since then it has driven me nuts! Part of the reason could have been that the car had been standing for a while and ignorance on my part when buying the thing. Since the purchase I have replace the clutch, gearbox, window regulator twice and its due the have the LRear ABS sensor replaced for its upcoming MOT. Everything has been reactive up to now and it has not been fun. I was told that Golf III and IV gearboxes are weak,windows cause lovely problems and ABS sensors are irritations. I must admit nothing quite matches having a car thats window does not close, in the pissing rain parked on a London street on a Friday night. Finally however, after getting the car back from the garage today, after having the second window regulator replaced, I am going to do the first proactive thing since buying the car and am fitting 4 new Michelin 195/50 Exaltos tomorrow morning. The sensor will be next weekends adventure, but life does go on. The annoying thing is that I really do like the car, but the problems, plus the reports of how VW reliablity has been going tits up lately makes me wonder if I will ever spend money on a Volkswagen product again.
