Engine coolant temp at 70ish
« on: 08 November 2005, 20:49 »
:undecided: Only had my mk3 8v gti for 5/6 weeks. Since I have had it, its always run cold 70ish until I start crawling around for 15/20 mins after which it will shoot back up to normal 90. But as soon as the car hits 30mph and above the temp will drop back to 70. The car came fiited with a pipercross induction kit someone told me that this may affect the coolant temperature??? Other than that the car seems to be running fine. Any ideas??? Cheers

Hi, I'm having a similar problem with my MK4 1.8T, which I've had for a few weeks. Temp fluctuates between 70 and 90 (90 when idling/driving slow and 70 when driving normally on the open road). I'm hoping this is normal, but I've seen another post that says it should stick to 90 no matter what the conditions. I'm gonna look into it further & will be sure to let u know what I find.

Run the engine from cold and grab the bottom radiator hose.  It should stay stone cold till the guage gets up to about 1/2.  If it gets lukewarm almost straight away, your thermostat is missing or stuck open.

Just done a full flush out and refill on my 16v GTI. Temp should read 90 on the gauge when warmed up and not drop to the 70 you all have seen. As Jonny says try the hose fondling, sounds like the thermo may have stuck.

if the thermostat has stuck will this mean that the radiator fan is always on?

nope, it means that coolant will always be flowing through the radiator.  The thermostats job is to cut off coolant flow thru the rad when the engine is cold, and only open when the engine is up to temp.

Its not likly that the stat will sieze open, but it is very likly some total tightarse has taken the housing off, chopped the middle of the thermostat out an re-assembled.  To save himself £3

i've got myself a new one from halfrauds but they only listed the one for the 8v on their system so i'll have to see if it fits, does anyone know if it does?
