Still Suffering!!

Hi all, further to my recent post regarding random misfire, replacing MAf (twice to ensure wasnt faulty part), and also carrying out diagnostics with VAGcom, I am still getting a misfire on a random basis. The diagnostics showed no fault whatsoever, not even a recorded misfire.

With the car being a 1999 model (1.8t) i have been told the coilpacks were not a problem until 2001 so this shouldnt be an isssue. However has anyone else with a pre 2001 mk4 had coil issues?

Also, is there anyway of checking the coils before replacing them all?!

when you say ramdom do you mean a random mis fire on one cylinder or ramdom misfire threw out the cylinders??

iam not sure on the coilpack symtoms but i hear its a common problem but not sure on what year of cars, but maybe a simple and cheaper thing to check first of all maybe to see if you dont have a knackered spark plug or lead, there was a test i remember my dad doing once to my old banger of a nova once, where you remove one plug at a time (still connected to the lead), hold it with some rubber handled pliers and hold the plug near to a metal part of the car, turn the engine over and the plug should be sparking, if not then you know you've got a problem either with the plug or lead etc..  i would check this before buying a new coil pack tbh, i mean there no point buying a new coil pack if all you've got is a tired old plug.

I think the coil pack probs were on 2000/2002 models, mine is a 51 plate 2002 model and mine were replaced by VW recall

I mean random in the sense that it seems to drop a cylinder with no warning, not sure if its the same one each time?? Sometimes its during acceleration after a gear change or it often happens simply sitting at the lights, all of a sudden, loss of power, revs drop right down to nothin like its going to stall then off we go again. Can run fine for days then just drops a misfire in out of the blue to let me know its not happy!

i would still check your leads and plugs first tbh..

have you noticed a lower mpg ? try changing the temp sensor.
