Odd Odometer!
« on: 03 November 2005, 16:04 »
Hi Guys,

Got a problem with the mileage on my car.....it only works for the first 5 or 6 miles every morning and then fails to clock up any miles at all for the rest of the day!  Some people might say that this is a good problem to have as it would keep my mileage down, but i'm an honest guy and want it fixed!  Does anyone know how to fix this or have an incline into what the problem might be?  It's a 1991 16v.

Cheers in advance!!

sounds like a loose speedo drive on one end of your cable or maybe broken inside. Does the speedo still work as in does it tell you how fast your going? If so it'll probably be a gear or similar in the clock that has gone if not a new speedo cable from the stealership or GSF should fix it.

Cheers
Scott

Yeah the speedo still works, just the miles only go up for the first few miles of every trip.
If a gear had gone in the clock then surely the miles would not go up at all???

I know what your saying but the speedo is all mechanical so if the speedo works then the miles should as well so I would say something inside isn't right don't know what though far too fiddly Keep your eyes open on Ebay.

I would be looking down the dials route as your speedo works which is mechanical drive, so there must be something not right inside the dials.

The reason it could only be working intermittently, is as the electrics warm up after a mile or so, a little cog or something could expand, and stop making contact?  So it could be something not quite alligned properly, that goes out as it expands. Make sense?!
