Hi

I have a MK1 GTi 1600 with the standard close ratio 5 speed box.  I want a taller 5th gear for crusing (45000rpm @ 70mph is doing my nut).  Any sugestions on where I could go for a different fith gear or different gearbox from what golf?

Cheers

kraM

Have just hear of a company called Cogbox gearbox.  Any ideas where to find them?  Have looked on google & yell.com, cannot find them anywhere

Mk2 boxes are good for about 140mph (160 on the later ones) as the gears are a bit longer, they bolt straight on and you get a bigger clutch too

They are bigger flanges and are very easy to swap over

Cool,

I now have a late MK2 8v box, but still sitting to high in the revs.  Maybe i'll have to cut and shut a 4+e box or some thing.  (Need a higher crusing gear) as my motor will pull 7000 rpm in top!!!

Cheers for the idea about the clutch, as my little one (clutch) slips when it comes on cam!!!

Mk1's do like to run at high revs its part of their charm   i usually keep mine at around 2500 revs, maybe 3000 once its warmed up, the real power doesn't come in till about 3500-4000 revs and it really gets going at about 4500

Drive it like you stole it and you wont go wrong

kraM, if you have enough convidence and the right tools, 5th gear can be removed from the gearbox without taking the gearbox out...
