poor starting
« on: 29 October 2003, 22:16 »
help, my 1.6 seems reluctant to start, both when cold and if left for half hour.
If turned over with no gas it tries to fire but stutters and then wont catch at all. leave it for 1min try again, same. eventually it does catch, stutters a bit and is then fine!
any ideas?

What fuel system on this car, kjet or carb.
Also look at the HT leads, dist cap etc.

car has k-jetronic. the distributor cap seemed clean inside and i gave it a wipe down on the outside. the ht leads didn't seem to be tracking when i popped the bonnet in the dark.

Could be leaking injectors ,dribble fuel when the engine is off, causing a over rich mixture (flooding) when you try to start. Pull the plug off the cold start injector (blue, o/s of the car in the inlet manifold) and start the car on full throttle 'till it fires up.
Steve.

Do you meen as in...
pull the plug off cold start,
start car,
refit plug,
drive off.
or....
pull plug off cold start,
start car,
drive off,
forget about problem. ie leave cold start disconnected forever.

This will prove the fault, up to you  ;)

is this proving a fault with the cold start or with the injectors?

Injectors, cold start injector is less likely to be the fault.
This will stop the cold start injector injecting the fuel for cold starting and causing a over rich fuel mixture.

HMMM, foot to the floor and it seems to start after two or three (well spaced) attempts. apears to be running a tad rich but its been raining too much so more investigating when it stops
