Helix vs JBL BassPro Hub – advice for Mk7 GTI

Hi all,

I’m looking to upgrade the standard audio system in my 2014 Mk7 GTI and am currently deciding between the VW Helix sound system and JBL BassPro Hub. Both are coming out at roughly the same price supplied and fitted.

The Helix appeals because the subwoofer fits in the spare-wheel well and uses a separate amp to improve the factory speakers. The JBL subwoofer is essentially an all-in-one sub/amp unit and also fits in the spare-wheel well.

I’m leaning towards these rather than Dynaudio as the cost of a Dynaudio setup is more than I want to spend.

My main concern with the Helix is that I understand it has now been discontinued. How much of an issue is that likely to be? If the amp or sub failed in a few years, are replacement parts still reasonably easy to find?

For anyone who has used either system:

- How happy are you with the sound quality?
- Any reliability or installation issues?
- Has anyone had a Helix fail, and was it repairable/replacement parts available?
- If you’ve heard both, which would you choose?
- Is the Helix noticeably better because it also improves the factory speakers?

If you had a Mk7 GTI with the standard audio system and roughly the same budget, which would you go for — Helix or JBL BassPro Hub, and why?

Hello Adz,
I fitted a Helix sub into my GTD estate and am still really impressed three years later. Not only is the Helix a amp/sub set up it is also a digital sound processor unit. You need a dongle (I rented one on ebay) to select the correct set up for your car (RHD, LHD, hatch, estate) and then the sound is centred on the drivers seat, it really is like the sound is being piped directly into your head!! The bass fills out the sound perfectly without being overbearing and the processor seems to make it do most of the heavy work leaving the factory fit speakers to manage the other parts. The wiring loom install wasn't too bad, just follow one of the numerous youtube videos. I bought mine second hand so have no idea how old it is but so far has been flawless.
