So for me, the answer to the original question, an 8.5 Clubsport! Picked it up today, was more upset by the TCR going than I thought I would be. It had done us proud, as near to faultless as it could be. Missing the relative simplicity already, the 8.5 is going to take time to get used to. Strikes me it has way too many features/options

I'll be genuinely interested what your thoughts will be on Clubsport vs TCR once you have got through the teething phase. On paper there isn't really anything that sells it to me other than it being a newer car. I'll hopefully try sample one but doubt i'll get far any time soon

I'm gathering my thoughts together as we speak, don't bank on it being of much use but I'll do my best!

Today I took the CS on a 3.5hr round trip which I had also very recently completed in the TCR in near exact traffic and weather conditions so it seems the right time to draw some comparisons. It was about 50/50 motorway/A roads, no major hold ups, some Sunday drivers and lovely sunny weather.

The overly large screen is gradually diminishing it's distraction level and actually, I'm starting to quite like it. If only you could switch the screen off and keep the radio on, that would be better. The satnav directions on the HUD are very useful, unlike the speed limit display which is frequently wrong. Ergonomically, overall, it's winning me over with the simplicity and although some plastic quality has dropped compared with the 7.5, the cabin feels an improvement.

Ride quality on DCC (TCR was also DCC) is better, less crashy and more comfortable yet it still grips well and flat. In fact the whole experience feels more upmarket as quieter too. Not as good though is engine noise, very little of it (I have the fake noise on Eco, exactly as I had on the old car). So although just as fast, there's less drama which is a shame.

Performance wise, the CS has much better initial throttle response and definitely less lag which is great. It lunges forward with very little input and just feels so much more eager to go but once rolling I'd be hard pushed to differentiate them.

As a summary, the CS is more refined and eager to go with a very comfortable interior. The TCR felt more raw with a firmer, crashier ride and a better soundtrack when pushed. Both are great, had I kept the TCR I'd have been very happy. But, I think the 8.5 is the better car, just wish it sounded more like the TCR.

Good to hear you are pleased with your new car. You sound slightly disappointed with the sound of the CS, I wrongly assumed the performance pack would have an updated exhaust, an akra or some such?

It makes sense to upgrade, you have to spend that pension on a new toy..... it's relentless with these funds arriving each & every month! :)

Cheers! It does have an akra exhaust and it might sound okay outside but nothing much inside. Some more playing around with settings me thinks. My funds may pale a bit compared with yours but not having to get up early and be harassed by idiots daily is great!

I have to agree with you on the lack of hassle, that's worth a lot!

My understanding is the Akras do take a while to "bed in", so it may sound a little fruitier after a few miles and heat cycles. A good excuse to drive it more. :)

It's only on 1800 miles atm so yes, I reckon it'll take quite a few miles to sound at it's best. The TCR was improving for a very long time. It's not a big deal, I do enjoy the drive so all good. Perhaps I'll get the windows open more often and go through some tunnels!

Covered over a thousand miles in the CS now and very happy with it. I think there must be better sound insulation as it is quieter inside and much more relaxed on a long drive but does sound good if you give it a bootful so I have high hopes as it puts on more miles for a better soundtrack. Economy is similar to the TCR too, got over 45mpg today on a 250 mile run. Impressed with the standard Hankook tyres too, no issues at all with them so far in a variety of weather conditions.

I would definitely recommend an 8.5 to anyone considering something newer.

Not sure if yours was an an Akrapovic TCR? But was initially disappointed with my TCR Akrapovic, excited to get it as a freebie, and was extremely happy had not paid for it when it was pretty mute out of the box. But there definitely was a bedding in period, and not sure what that is technically? but sound track really changed by time did a few thousand miles and had some amazing overruns and pops/cracks by time it was returned with 24000 miles.

Also, remember moving some of kids stuff from digs and had an empty car with seats down and you realise how much the sound is dampened in the cabin with all seats up etc. So that might be a test in the CS.

I had my parcel shelf out and seats down in my MK8 clubsport to transport a push-bike, I can confirm it's is noticeably louder like this, and I took full advantage once the bike was dropped off
