I did a thing today - chopped in my 7.5 PP for a TCR. Managed to find a nice 3dr grey with 30k miles on. I'd been scouring auto trader for weeks and couldn't find anything else that really interested me.

I've got a thread of mine on the gallery section. Will upload some pics of the TCR when I collect but it's fitted with DCC and Belvedere's.

I really racked my brain as to what I want to get next and everything I thought of, I just had this nagging at the back of my mind that really, for what I do with a car - I don't need anything more than what the Golf does for me. Great running costs, reliable, plenty of power. So thought why not just go for the TCR and hold on to it for as long as I can.

A couple of weeks ago I hit a few different dealers to look at as many of the cars I'm interested in to see if I could rule out a few. No test drives, just sit in and fiddle with knobs...

The GR86 was the biggest surprise as I had very low expectations, very nice inside but not a car I could see my OH and I going on holiday in plus the back seats might as well not been there. As a toy, yes.

Audi A5 was the biggest disappointment. I still love the look but inside it was rather snug considering how big a car it is. Also, incredibly dark and gloomy, really needed a sunroof and or a lighter interior. Sunroofs are very difficult to find on these so this is likely a non-starter.

The BMW Z4 was lovely and a big boot. Unfortunately my OH has categorically ruled out any convertible so that's the TT gone too as the coupe is also too compromised. My mum needs an occasional lift and at 85 with Parkinsons, the Golf is difficult enough....

A Golf R Black Edition in Lapiz looked really good, even the huge screen seemed tolerable. Not ruled out but I was looking for a change.

So, after rather liking a 2 series coupe, I popped into a BMW dealer for a test drive of a 230i. RWD, 240bhp and an 8 speed ZF with a nice quality interior, useable rear seats and a big boot. Ideal I thought! However, they are heavy and that plus the drop in power with a box that wasn't overly ready to drop a gear made for a competent drive but short on thrills. Perhaps I needed to be a bit more aggressive with it to get something back, I'm currently mulling it over but may have another test drive. There is of course the M240i but I don't want all the additional associated costs.

Watts, it's a shame you didn't test drive the GR86, it is is really quite special, you do need some Rwd experience to explot it, which is not instinctive if you have stepped out of a Fwd GTi.

A friend wanted my CS and offered very favourable terms against his new GR86, it was tempting, but the lack of hatch stopped the deal. with 3 x 2 seaters, i need at least one practical car.

I know 2 people who have gone from Gti CS & R to M2 comp,,,,,both moved on within the year. I can't really see the point of a 230i, you will always lust after a car further up the range?

Both moved on to Gr Yaris and love them, they are not as small as you might think, it's surprising, particularly when parked next to a mk7 Golf.

The BMW, 86 & Vantage you mentioned are all Rwd, do you want to go in that direction?

No bias, the Golf is my only Fwd and I like the way it drives.

As for the elderly, how often do you drive them about?  I often take my Mum out in a bespoilered Lhd 911, being Lhd she is sitting on the offside giving the impression she is driving?  The only real issue was with my dad iin my Elise S1, he could get in, but it took some time to lift him out.... If you avoid Elise, Caterham & Morgan, you will probably be fine? :)

Some great points there, cheers! I've booked another test drive for Thursday, will see what I think then.

You *wanted* a change Watts.

Unfortunately the most competent scorer in all areas and certainly the car that would amass the most points if you tallied them all up also looks its best in blue.

So much for change eh?

At least it would be a change of colour…
