Strange Gremlins - Mk8.5 GTI
« on: 23 July 2025, 14:43 »
I've had a couple of gremlins of late... first one with the car slamming on when reversing a couple of time when the parking sensor thinks i am going to hit something but there's nothing there - on one occasion it thought there was something at the side of the car.. someone had walked past but they were long gone... it's done it a couple of occassions... should i speak with VW ?

Second one is on occasion, the front wiper comes on when i pull off the drive on cold start up.. no rain, nothing wet on the sensor... it's done it 4 or 5 times over a period of a  few weeks.. very intermittent.

Anyone had anything similar or advices on what best to do... I'm thinking of getting VW to look at it as will all be under warranty..

I think you can file both of these under "normal". They all do it from time to time.

The first issue is not the parking sensors as such, it's the "Rear assist" function. I don't like it either, the slam-on is very aggressive, almost heart-attack inducing. The car *thinks* you're about to run into something. I find if you just reverse slowly and have your foot lightly on the brake pedal it helps minimise it from happening.

The wipers, yeah I've seen this happen too from time to time. Didn't think much of it. I guess if you leave your wipers in the OFF position rather than Auto (and only put them back in Auto as and when needed), then it won't happen.

Seems pretty normal to me too unfortunately.

4.5 years in mk8’s has taught me to do certain manoeuvring with a covering foot putting light pressure on the brake to prevent severe whiplash when the car anchors everything on, be it reversing into a parking space and it spots a pedestrian heading toward their parked car over 20 feet away and going in the opposite direction, edging off a driveway onto the road and it decides a parked car opposite is an incoming ballistic missile, or the 1 inch lip at the entrance to my garage which it decides is something unfathomably dangerous.

Now moved to an 8.5 and the very first morning I went to use the car both front and rear wipers activated when the engine was started despite it being totally dry. Both wipers now left in the ‘off’ position.

I note on the 8.5 that light assist also stays on with each ignition cycle whereas on the mk8 it had to be selected Avery time the engine was started.

I've had it when moving forwards too! It really is heart attack inducing. I was slowly nudging forwards out of a junction when it slammed on for no apparent reason. My daughter in the back seat was brought to tears with the violence of it. I suppose there may be a day I'll be thankful the feature exists but in the main I hate it!

Yeah i can imagine. My wife was driving it on one occasion when it slammed on while reversing, she was absolutely livid with the car, she was shaking it scared her that much with the force of it.

I don't like the front crash sensor when it thinks your going to go into someone in front if the other car is turning off the road for example at a junction on a corner and your car is going round the corner away from the stopped car, it's not clever enough to detect the road bending so the crash alarm sounds (which make you take your eyes off the bloody road!)

I was under the impression that the distance at which the warning appeared could be adjusted?! Doesn’t seem that it actually can be, I’m sure I did this in my 8.5, but looking back through the menus there is no option I can see to do this, I know for certain it was possible in my Mk7, but I’m sure I’ve done this since then, maybe it was in my previous Mk8 🤷‍♂️, could have been that I coded it though, my memory fails me unfortunately.

It’s the noise it makes too when it slams on that nearly gives me a heart attack! Sounds like the whole gearbox has fell apart!
