CIBM MK8.5 Clubsport
« on: 22 June 2025, 18:54 »
I took delivery of my new MK8.5 just over 6 weeks ago, and so I suppose it's time to share it here with the community.

Specification

I went a little bit mad on the extras front since this was my first ever new car, I wanted to make sure it had everything I could want, so here's the spec.

- Crystal Ice Blue Metallic paint
- Heads Up Display
- Harmon Kardon sound
- Adaptive Chassis Control
- Queenstown alloys
- Panoramic sunroof
- Area view

The only extra I didn't go for really was the performance pack, I wanted the Queenstown alloys and the performance pack on the configurator forces Estorils. I also skipped the black pack, even though it's cheap as chips here in Ireland (~€200). For me, a GTI needs the red stripe.

Arrival

Here it is arriving on the truck.

29/01/2025 - Ordered
20/02/2025 - Week 12 build confirmed
21/03/2025 - Build started (Friday of week 12)
24/03/2025 - Hand over to sales, exit production plant
26/03/2025 - Arrival at port of shipment
16/04/2025 - Finally boarded a ship
22/04/2025 - Arrival at importer
26/04/2025 - Arrival at dealer

Paint Protection

Once the car arrived, I didn't actually pick it up. I told the garage not to touch it and it immediately went to a local detailer for a front PPF and ceramic coat.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to my MK7 Performance Pack after 6 years of very happy motoring.

Modifications

I've made a couple of small modifications to the car since getting it. A quick trip to an auto electrician to reinstall my dashcam (Nextbase 522GW) and also to make the car a little less likely to go walkabout.

And just today, I visited (forum member) Joe, to help me install the upgraded R paddles. These are great, so much better than the tiny ones that come with the car, and are a very nice cosmetic upgrade.

Of course, this was a great chance to line up our CSes for a little photoshoot!

Overall Impressions

I've put a little over 1500km on the car since I've got it and much of that time was spent driving relatively cautiously because I wanted to make sure to break in the engine properly, but now that I've done that and have pushed the boat out a little bit I feel confident sharing my impressions.

Overall, the MK8.5 feels like an upgrade in almost every way over the MK7. The DCC in comfort mode makes for a lovely relaxed ride for when you're driving family around and doing daily driver duties. It feels like a more solid, luxurious car in general.

Nurburgring mode when you're driving it on is amazing. It's like it was made for Irish roads with the damping. The throttle is much more responsive than the MK7 and the extra 70hp are more than noticeable. It's massively fast and incredibly fun to drive. I'm delighted with how it feels. Solid, composed, responsive and keen to push on. It's just a brilliant car to drive. I was worried it wouldn't feel like much of an upgrade on top of my MK7 but it really is.

The infotainment is top notch and very responsive. I have no complaints here and have had no issues with it. I like the dials too. Being able to customise with G forces, HP, and turbo pressure is really cool.

I've tried out the travel assist feature and it works surprisingly well. It's a little spooky to be honest. I'd like if the steering wheel was better at detecting your hand, when I rest my hand on it while using travel assist as I normally would while using adaptive cruise control, it often thinks I've let go of the wheel.

Area view is great, I really like being able to see exactly where the sides and the front of the car are. It's great peace of mind when navigating tight car parks. It really helps to get perfectly straight on in parking spaces.

I haven't tried the auto park yet, or the feature that will exit a parking space for you, I need to take it to a deserted car park to give it a proper go :)

Negative Points
There are some annoyances. The fact that the speed warning turns back on every time just adds an annoying extra step to turning on the car. Same for lane departure. I hope the new VW encryption is broken so that we can somehow turn these off. They have at least make it really easy to turn these off, it's just a couple of taps.

The Harmon Kardon sound system does sound good, but it's not what I'd call amazing. Solid, but not spectacular.

There's not a huge amount of interior storage space and I'd really like if the cup holders had a sliding cover like the MK7 did.

The wireless charger isn't great. It fails to work every now and then. The cubby also isn't quite large enough to fit my Pixel 8 Pro and close the lid. I have a case with magsafe magnets in it, and I think this makes the charger less effective. They really need to improve that design.

The HUD is cool but I'm long sighted so it's usually out of focus when I'm looking at the road ahead. It's a nifty little addition, but I'm not sure I'd definitely go for it again.

I'd hoped the exhaust would be a little louder when pushing on. I don't really get too many pops and bangs. Emotion start is really nice though, I love that they've added that little feature.

I really don't like not having a spare wheel. I often do long road trips out and back to sports events in a single day and random punctures are a fact of life. I really don't like that I'd be somewhat helpless in this situation, waiting on roadside assist. I'll likely pick up a spare wheel, but that has the negative of not fitting on the front tyres so it would be a nightmare in the case of a front tyre puncture. I carry an inflator and might add a puncture repair kit too so I can maybe repair my own punctures.

Great write up and nice touch that you had help from a forum member to assist in the paddles, that's what forums should be all about.

Lovely colour too that Ice blue crystal. Never seen one of those.

Joe is a flappy paddle replacement expert, he's done it about 5 times I think now for himself and different people!

Fabulous looking car seanaodh, lovely photos and your early days impressions review was really good to read. Lots of useful things covered there.
Seeing the CIBM and Moonstone parked together like that I’m hard pressed to pick a favourite, they both look superb.
I miss my mk8 Clubsport and the 8.5 just adds some extra class to the looks.
By chance I was passing my local dealer earlier and spotted their demo Clubsport parked up so I had a quick nose at it. It’s a white example with sunroof and Queenstowns so would’ve made a great addition to your photoshoot! That example has the Performance Pack with Akrapovič and the exhaust does look really nice, not €3500 nicer than the standard pipes though!

Cheers Exonian. Yeah the exhaust is a very desirable upgrade, it looks mean. I even queried VW Ireland to see if I could get it specced while keeping Queenstown alloys and they said it wasn't possible. So you can imagine my frustration when I saw a brand new CS in another branch of the same dealer a few weeks after I picked mine up that had exactly that. The performance pack exhaust with different wheels. I probably could have pushed them a bit harder on it and made it happen.

I also looked into a retrofit but the part comes back as €4,200 plus VAT. Yikes!

Back to the detailer today for a first wash post PPF and ceramic coat. He brings back customers to make sure they know how to take care of the ceramic coat properly after a few weeks which is a good idea. This also means that it's back to being sparkling clean.

I've been really impressed so far with the ceramic coat and PPF. The bugs and dirt slid off incredibly easily and a quick top up application of a Modesta product brought back amazing shine and further enhanced beading. We'll see how it holds up over time but so far I'm pleased.

Cars looking brilliant lads.

She is stunning in Crystal Ice Blue Sean and the Queenstown alloys work brilliantly with it, best VW alloy for a long time.

On the Akra and alloys, I think the configurator allows you to add a different set of alloys if you have the performance pack selected but looks as if you effectively get charged for two sets of alloys which is a faff.

Very few Irish examples with the Akra.
Formerly GTI but now gone to the darkR side…
