Today I when to my local dealer to enquiry about placing an order, but largely I was there to see if I can charm them into giving me a discount for my 10+ years of doing business with them.

We had a long conversation and I tried to gather information they may have at a dealer level. He told me there have been allocated 8 slots, so 30+ in total as they have a few dealerships. They have sold 1 slot thus far. Only 8 slots will be available for the year, and customers are free to order from factory in whichever spec, but not alcantara wheel. I asked repeatedly, in different ways, surely they will receive more slots down the line, either in the next quarter, when press cars come to the UK or perhaps when they sell all their slots. However, based on what he’s been told by the bosses so far, it’s only 8, with the future being unknown.

Absolutely, not a penny off the list price. On paper, it’s a Golf GTI TRC level time-bound production, i.e., free to order all year round, but at the prices of a limited production Clubsport S. It would have been much better if VW UK made up their mind instead of pussyfooting around and said its 50k with X limited production take it at full price or leave it, no discounts.

Can anyone who has ordered these types of special edition cars before shed some light on their experiences and if this is just the dealer selling strategy? I find it hard to believe dealers across the UK have only been given a limited number of slots of the whole year whilst all the PR press says it will be available for order for the whole 2026.

Current delivery lead time is 3/4 months.

On the off topic, he mention that the Golf R with the 2.5 RS3 engine is in late prototype cycle now, which confirms Autocar’s report earlier this year.

I bought a mk4 r32 new, each dealer was given 7 slots per year for 2 years and they were all allocated. I randomly called one day and they'd been given an extra 2 allocations so I snapped one up. No discount and as none were in the country at that point no test drive either, similar to this.

Ooooh. Great spot! Seems to contradict what I’ve been told (in classic Vw style!). I’ve asked my dealer about it as I only ordered 2 weeks ago. Worth a shot!

Finger on the pulse Andy!

Those gifts are exclusive to the Spanish market (at least the Mk8 replica) where they have decided to sell only 325 units.

This might be of interest to some. Not sure how they’ll actually get the cars though.

Would be interested to hear how you got on with the dealer regarding the £1K contribution that Exonian spotted. I simply cannot remember any offer on the ED40 so I presume take up is low if they are offering a contribution after just 2 weeks, thanks Michele

Strangely on Sunday my wife send me a screenshot of a VW UK ad about their new 2 week sales push campaign. Despite what the small print says about Edition 50 being excluded from the big £5250 VW contributions, the calculator online has been updated to have a 1k contributions for the Edition 50, whilst also maintaining the no contribution option.

I have contacted another neighbouring VW dealer via email, played dumb and pretended a knew very little about the car to get some clarification. Sales Ex said it's limited production, but of course unsure about the exact amount, so not very limited. They have 3 allocations and he suspects orders to close at the end of this month. He stated no more further waves/allocations later this year when I pushed for info, this initial set is all they're getting. This is the same message I got my own dealer, and what's been seen online, but contrary to reviews and initial press sayings it'll be available all year round. I did explain in the email, the 1k vs 5.2k contribution difference was vast, and could we meet in the middle. I still stand to be corrected, and thus I can only assume the dealer would enable the 1k contribution.

This is russian roulette. Take them on face value and place a factory order or wait until later in the year when they may be more deals. If this is all the allocations they will provide and they're sold, then depreciation for a 50k+ Golf will be better managed. If it goes largely unsold, they may start to offer bigger incentives.
