Ceramic Coating options
« on: 22 May 2025, 21:13 »
Hi,

Been looking at changing my car and the mk7 and 7.5 I have previously had coated with Siramik coatings which have been great but the detailer I used has given up.

Therefore just thought I would ask what products people are having on their new cars? And what people would recommend.

The closest detailer to me is Gtechniq approved which I am tempted to try.

Out of interest, is there a particular reason that you go with coatings over sealants/waxes?

I use the latter and honestly prefer it.

I’m with you @Nino - it’s waxes and sealants for me.

I can understand that some people might be ‘time poor’ and / or not have off road space to clean / detail their car, so they choose to use the services of a professional detailer with purpose-built premises and get their car ceramic coated. Ceramic coatings are reputed to have better longevity and superior durability to a sealant or wax, so in theory should reduce the time (and frequency?) needed for subsequent car washing activities. Downsides of professionally applied ceramic coatings for me would be the initial cost, the need to get the car periodically inspected and the coating reapplied / topped up if necessary (presumably at additional cost) to maintain the coating’s warranty, and some of the questionable warranties provided with these products.

I did initially ceramic coat (Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour) the alloys on my current car when I got it; I followed the instructions to the letter in terms of pre-application prep, application of the product and curing time. In all honesty, I was quite disappointed with the results - durability wasn’t great and IMHO no better than some dedicated wheel sealants that I’ve used in the past. I’ve subsequently gone back to using a wheel sealant.

For the past 10 years or so years, my ‘go-to’ wax / sealants have been either Collinite 845 Insulator Wax or Fusso Coat 12 Month’s Wax (actually a synthetic sealant). I’ve found both of those products give very good durability and are good value price wise too. I’m not sure of Fusso’s 12 month claim though as I usually wax or seal my car’s paintwork every 6 months. I don’t find waxing or sealing my car twice a year to be a hardship as it’s something I enjoy doing .

Hi, It started with my mk7 when I had some marks on the door I noticed after buying the car from dealer prep so took it to a detailer as was not brave enough to do heavy polishing and what I was trying had not removed them. At the time they were trialing their own ceramic coating brand and just found it so easy to clean and maintain after that.

For the R I went back and got the accrediated version applied and it’s so easy to look after. Just a quick top up every 6 months with their sealant and it’s still beeding 7 years later. For me it’s definitely been worth the money I paid. I guess it’s personal preference.

I was thoroughly unimpressed by the GTechniq coating I had on my last. It didn’t performed well at all, despite proper maintenance. I have a Gyeon coating on this one, and it’s 10 times better. Better beading, easier cleaning, more gloss, and lasting much better.

Interesting to hear your experience with Gtechniq is pretty much the same as mine. I be sticking with old school waxes and sealants though, rather than trying a different brand of ceramic coating products.

Thanks for the comments they are interesting to here as the closest place to me does Gtechniq which I was considering. It’s good to here people’s thoughts on what they have and their experience.

I’ve used ceramic coatings on my R32 before, and honestly, for the cost I didn’t find it worth it personally.

Oddly enough, I actually enjoy the whole process of prepping the car and waxing it. It’s therapeutic in a way. The issue I see a lot is that people don’t prep the paint properly or maintain the wax layers, and then they complain that it’s not working. In most cases, it’s user error lack of proper decon, no clay bar, skipping polish, or not topping up the wax at the right intervals.

Here’s a video of my car after a proper full prep:

Process included decontamination, clay bar, machine polish, you know the drill. On top of that, I used two products: Fusso Coat 12 Month as a base layer/sealant, and Soft99 Kiwami Wax as a topper.

The idea is:

Fusso Coat acts as the long-term sealant

Kiwami adds that deep gloss and hydrophobic top-up

Some people think Fusso is enough on its own and I’d agree if you’ve got a weekend car that sees less than 10 washes a year. But for a daily like mine, you really want to top it up. I reapply a coat of Kiwami every 3–4 months, and the car stays looking like this (see video) until I strip everything and redo it the following year.

Important note: not just any wax can top up Fusso. Some products can actually strip or damage the Fusso layer. Kiwami is designed to work alongside it and it applies smoothly, bonds well, and helps maintain that high level of beading. You could reapply Fusso itself, but anyone who’s used it knows it’s not the easiest to work with. You have to apply it in small sections, and it can be a pain to buff off.

Kiwami, by contrast, lets you do 1–2 full panels at a time, buffs off easily, and if you've ever used something like Autoglym HD Wax, the experience is very similar. That makes it ideal for regular top-ups without the faff.

As for Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour, I also used this on my R32 wheels and got about 4 years of durability before reapplying. Again, prep is key. I had just had the wheels professionally refurbished, so I brought them inside, applied the coating at room temperature, and let them cure indoors for over 12 hours before putting them back on the car.

The instructions even say:

"Allow the coating to cure indoors for at least 12 hours before exposing it to the elements."
And I followed that to the letter. End result? Fantastic durability and protection.

So yeah, while ceramics have their place, I’ve had excellent results (and more enjoyment) sticking with a solid sealant + wax combo and focusing on proper prep and consistent maintenance.

Thanks for the info.

It's why I started the threat really to see what people are doing and using. I have been doing the same thing on this car for over 7 years now, so just washing and then every 2-3 months using the spray topper and it's been so easy to look after. Obviously in that time though detailing has moved on.

Its good to hear what people are doing and for me currently who has limited time to look after the car a quick wipe round after washing is ideal.
