New member searching a Mk3 GTi 16v or 8v
« on: 05 April 2025, 15:22 »
Hello,

My name is Vincent, I'm 50 years old, and I live in Normandy.
I discovered this nice forum while searching for technical documents on Google.
In France, forums on the Mk3 are very underused, if not abandoned.
In the 2000s, I owned a 1996 Mk3 1.8.
I've always missed that car.
Today, I'm looking for a GTi as a second car.

Regards.

Bienvenue Vincent, good luck with finding a nice mk3
What do you drive as your main car?

There aren’t too many mk3 Golfs left here in the UK, the good ones are kept by enthusiasts and the rusty ones mostly gone.
The mk3 never lasted as well as a mk2 due to a few reasons, corrosion being the worst with lots of salt applied to the roads in winter here. When I have been to Southern Europe I’ve seen plenty of mk3’s so they must love the warmer climates. When I went to Bulgaria some years ago there were literally loads of very tidy mk3 Golfs around.

Hello and thank you, Exonian.

My main car is a 2022 Toyota CH-R 2.0.

In France, too, we don't see many Mk3s anymore. The best-preserved ones often come from the south of France or are imported from Spain.

The price range varies greatly, between €4,000 and €14,000 for the latest 16v special editions.
It will be a car for driving. I'm not looking for perfect cosmetic condition, but rather well-maintained mechanics and, above all, no rust.

It’s a very long time ago now but my brain and memory worked much better when I was younger, I can still remember the launch of the mk3 and the big announcements of improved corrosion resistance and safety with ‘mash welded’ sills and galvanised metal. And yet the metal must’ve been pretty rubbish as they used to rust far more rapidly than mk2’s and even late model mk1’s.
I also remember VW making a big thing of ‘global sourcing’ of components rather than relying mostly on German components. Maybe they used Far East steel to go with the trashy (UK supplied but sometimes Far East assembled) Wolfrace wheels which replaced the better quality BBS, Borbet and Ronal wheels previously used - and funnily enough a few years later things drifted back to the previous ways and suppliers.

The CH-R is a pretty cool car

I owned a 1994 Mercedes W124 coupe, one of the first phase 3s. The phase 2s from the early 90s were reputed to be of higher quality. From the mid 90s, Mercedes started to cut corners on the quality of components. I think Volkswagen must have followed the trend of many manufacturers.
