Underbody protection parts
« on: 17 March 2025, 18:58 »
Hi all, most on the forum have previously owned Mk7/7.5's and I'm wondering if any that added underbody parts to those cars have done the same to their Mk8/8.5's.

I'm referring to some of the retrofits/updates listed by GolfDave's 'how to' list on the Mk7 forum.

I added the larger engine undertray, exhaust tunnel cover and another nearer the rear to my 7.5 to give it a bit more protection from salt etc.
I also fitted the rear subframe harmonic damper which I felt made a positive improvement.

I left all the parts on my 7.5 when I sold it but would consider adding a few to the Clubsport, if they fit and are going to help protect it underneath as looking to keep it longterm.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Fred, gives me something else to think about once the car arrives.
I like doing some wee jobs to a new car to make it more 'mine' but as the years pass I may not enjoy crawling under it quite as much!!!

Prior to it arriving I bought a few parts from LLLParts to go with the spare wheel for my Clubsport, namely tool box top/bottow, strap etc.

Whilst looking I decided to get the splashguards to protect the rear subframe/suspension from winter roads/salt.
Today I had a quick look under the car ahead of fitting them only discover they are already fitted as standard to my car.

They were never fitted to my Mk7 or 7.5 and have no idea if they are fitted to Mk8's but found it hard to believe that VW have added something to a car. Has the longterm penny pinching removal of equipment come to an end!!

Indeed, the rear axle aero has been fitted since launch on mk8’s.
VW’s generosity only extends as far as squeezing the fuel economy and emissions targets!

Thinking about it, I have a vague memory of Volkswizard showing the underside of his Clubsport a few years ago, he must’ve been spraying the suspension bits with wax in that one.

My grandson just bought a 2020 A3 1.5 and I was surprised to see all the underbody protection parts fitted that golf dave listed.
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.
