DCC shock shocker

My Mk8 has hit 4 years old and 45k on the clock.

First MOT I got an advisory for misting on the front shocks, 2nd MOT (today) its failed with a leaking left front shock.

VW extended warranty won't cover it (apparently shocks are consumables and even on a new car only warranty'ed for 2 years...)

£550 inc vat from an indy to replace it.

Never had a shock go on a Golf before - not on the 3 years 90k on the first GTD nor the 4.5 years 77k on the second one.

No, I could have had it done by them on my "all in" but not having them tell me stuff needs replacing when it doesn't. Quite sick of that with them.

Had a bit of misting noted on one of mine a couple of years back. Hasn’t been noted since. At least mine isn’t DCC!

It’s the state of our roads causing this type of issue, pot holes / unsuitable speed bumps etc. My prior cars were VAG and had advisories for shock misting at under 30k miles and under 4 years old, not great.

I’ve got the all in on mine and MOT is due in Sept, I’m nervous now and also not sure if the dealerships put advisories that really aren’t to make more revenue. 

I wonder what the price difference between DCC and non DCC shocks are.

Good luck getting it fixed, once it’s done then that’s it for a while longer.

A nasty shock (sorry!) but that's a good price for fitting a new DCC shock. I know someone who paid a VW dealer about £900 to replace both front shocks on a standard (non-DCC) Golf R a couple of years back. As said/implied by others, modern shock absorbers were simply not designed to deal with the craters on our appalling British roads!

I wonder what the price difference between DCC and non DCC shocks are.

The DCC shock is £253 and the bearing is £27 (plus VAT), seems the non-DCC one can be had for about £130 less (inc VAT).

So about half the price.

The saving I've made here is by not using a VW dealer for the install... their labour rates are double what I pay my local guy.

Am guessing the right side doesn't take as many whacks from potholes
