Coolant Leak, HELP :-(

Hi,

The low coolant light appeared on my dash.
After turning my engine off after my drive to work this morning i noticed smoke/steam? coming from the engine bay and coolant leaking under the car. Slow drip

2 years ago i had the thermostat housing unit and water pump replaced at a VW dealership.
I have only done 4K miles in it since! (i end up getting a work van and my car was just sat on my drive for awhile )

Im thinking the same thing has happend again? Do you think this could be the same problem?

If so, how much should i be paying to get this replaced and repaired? I paid main dealer prices last time as my car was already in for a service and it would have been a pain for me to find time off work and sort another day for it to get fixed elsewhere so i just paid up!

Would i be a fool to continue using the car for the next 2 days? re filling the coolant before my drive? i have a 8 mile commute to work.

Well from what I’ve read on here (no personal experience) when leaking they don’t tend to have massive failures that would cause a breakdown. I’d be tempted to top up with the correct coolant mix and at least try it for a few miles before doing the commute. That way you can do a bit of diagnosis to determine exactly where it is coming from. If you carry a gallon of coolant with you and check/top up before each journey you should be fine.

The quotes I got from independents for the water pump and thermostat last year ranged from £800 to £1200, though to be honest the VW specialists seem to charge similar (if not more in some cases) to the main dealer.

2 years warranty on all vw replacement parts so eleven if just out they should be doing the least a large goodwill contribution if it has failed.

If not complain more 😉

Looks to be leaking only when the cars running? possibly... just checked and nothing under the car after leaving it overnight and refilling the reservoir.

Ive got the car booked in for a service to the same main dealership next week so they should spot this/ ill mention it and ill see what price i can get.

Get a price from a good independent as well as you can literally save hundreds over dealer prices just on the Labour cost. Had mine doe 5 times, 3 on warranty and the lat two at an independent.

What actually causes the failure of the parts though?

Is it vibration or is it corrosion?

If its corrosion then time will do it regardless of the number of miles...

Design, the latest version seems to be solid, they have been doing lots of revisions to the housing over the years.

Overcomplication and a reliance on cheap plastic.

But almost all other car makes are doing it in some areas or another.
