Creaking sunroof

My creaking sunroof is really starting to bug me now. I have done a lot of research and have seen a sunroof service post which looks a good idea.

I have gumni pledged the rubber and cleaned up everywhere around the sunroof which has not worked.

I am just wondering if anyone on here has found a way of stopping the creaking that has actually worked?

Are you 100% sure it is the sunroof? Lubricating the seals is the only way I know of. I assume you have driven with it open to confirm it's not door seals as they need lubricating too.

Cars have an annoying habit of hiding where creaks actually come from. I’m with Watts - from personal experience, clean and Gummi Pflege the door seals and see how you get on.

As above I had an annoying creaking from my sunroof, it turned out it was the rear seat latches.

I’ve got the same, bit of a weird noise above/behind my driving position. Almost like it’s something rattling. The amount of times I’ve checked the rear seats are clicked in place!

How’d you discover it was the rear seat latches? Mine’s a 5 door and still under new car warranty (in Australia) until September 2025, thinking of taking it in. I got it last month and only done 16k miles.

I’ve got the same, bit of a weird noise above/behind my driving position. Almost like it’s something rattling. The amount of times I’ve checked the rear seats are clicked in place!

I had an annoying rattle coming from the rear left for months which I though was the parcel shelf. But a lucky find was that the little plastic covers on the top of the front passenger seat that the head rest bars passed through were loose! They just need a twist to secure them and problem solved. Couldn't quite believe how much noise a small bit of plastic could make.

I’d be loathe to let a dealer try and find an unwanted interior cabin noise; I’ve read ‘horror stories’ on forums of dealers damaging pieces of interior trim (and then denying causing the damage) when removing the trim to try and locate unwanted cabin noises, plus creating more unwanted noises by not refitting the trim correctly / securely.

If you flip the rear seat backrest forward and the rattling noise stops, it’ll almost certainly be the rear seat latches that’s the source of the unwanted noise. The quick and easy DIY fix is to wrap some tape (electrical insulation tape or similar) around the metal loop that the seat backrest catches latch onto which removes any free play between the catches and the metal loop and should stop the noise.

Totally agree on not going down the dealer route. My ‘rattle’ actually turned out to be the door seals chattering against the painted door frame - probably due to my over zealous use of wash & wax shampoo coating the rubber. Cleaned seals and frames with isopropyl and treated the rubber with Gummi pfledge - seems to have worked ok. Absolutley drove me to distraction though.

As SRGTD's recommendation, just tesa / fabric tape around the rear seat latch hooks. VW actually discovered it for me, after I had mentioned it to them during a service.
