Mk8 CS or TCR?
« on: 27 January 2025, 09:17 »
Currently in a 7.5 PP and been exploring Auto Trader to see what's on the market. There's a few MK8 CS' coming up for reasonable money that look quite interesting.

The question is would you leave a 7.5 PP for a MK8 CS or instead pick up a TCR?

I suppose the first thing is why you want to change? You could get a stage 1 remap on your current car if you wanted more go or if you want something different then perhaps a TCR would be too similar? Personally I think a MK8 going out/out of warranty is far too risky.

When I decided to get a Golf GTi, I had decided I wanted a MK7.5 TCR and did a lot of research on these whilst looking around. Like you I found that the MK8 CS was very well priced in comparison to the TCR's, around the same and sometimes less. I went and looked at both, really liked the TCR, but much preferred the new tech and modern elements of the MK8 and ended up getting the CS. I do understand concerns over warranty and how new these are, you can always get an extended warranty or an all-in package from VW for peace of mind. (With both really). If you already have the MK7.5, then the next logical step is the MK8 and it'll feel like you've changed rather than getting the same again. Go take one for a spin, it'll probably sell it or even not! (In which case try something else or stick with your PP).

I do like the current one but, I do just find it a bit middle-of-the-road so to speak. Even with the res delete and TCR backbox it doesn't have much character as far as sound goes. It drives well, there's nothing inherently wrong with it, I just keep seeing Mk8's and they've grown on me a lot, I think the CS particularly looks a lot more special.

The mk8 isn’t that new - it was launched at the end of 2019 and the Clubsport was launched towards the end of 2020 so some of the early mk8 Clubsports will be out of warranty now.

I think if prospective owners have concerns over the mk8, it may well be in relation to software-related issues, and VW’s All-In warranty or traditional Extended Warranty aren’t as comprehensive as the original 3 year factory warranty; essentially they cover electrical and mechanical failures, but there are the usual range of exclusions common to the majority of car extended warranty products. There’s no mention that I could see in the warranty documentation about covering software-related issues, so these warranty products won’t give complete peace of mind if the main cause of concern of prospective owners is software-related issues.

I tend not to overly worry about warranties these days. I more often than not end up modifying my cars anyway so they're void to begin with.

Answered your own question? If you are happy to take a chance and as you say, you're not bothered by a warranty, then go for it. Why not go a wee bit more exclusive and go for a CS45?

There aren't really any local to me however I have found a CS that's quite close by, hoping to view this week and make a decision. Got an offer for mine at £20k which I think is quite good given the spec etc.

How did you get on? I'm in the same boat, TCR or CS

Was the 8CS available with Akra as an option?

Yes it was but very expensive and therefore quite rare.
