How many get the 'OMG' thought after placing order!!

Afternoon all,

As the title asks, do many/any of you place an order and then the dreaded, 'what the feck have I done' thought appears.
I ordered last week and I get it quite a lot with cars. I really love the S3 Vorsprung and look at it thinking, why am I doing this. However if a loved it that much, I wouldn't, so....!!
The main reason this time is that I love GTi's and it's probably my last chance of a new petrol one.

I do always end up more than happy when I get the new car but it's just the doubts in the interim, especially changing from a 6 cylinder/more powerful/ better perceived quality car, etc.

Anyway, not looking for any serious in-depth answers just wondering if it not just me.

No, it’s not just you. I can certainly remember having the same thought when I bought my last two VW’s.

I was feeling like that yesterday when I rang the dealer to make an enquiry and 5 hours later I bought a mk8.5 GTi. Although my previous cars include an M3, Golf R and two Golf GTis, my current car is an Audi A3 which I have had and enjoyed from new 4 years ago, it just does not have the character that a GTi has.

Even when I drove my Audi this morning I was questioning OMG what have I done.

I'd guess it's almost a universal feeling after a large purchase.  It certainly applies to my house, car, hi-fi, laptop, maybe even the washing machine!  It's part of the reason we keep browsing, even after committing to buy, just so we can check if anything 'better' is available.

We research and test before we buy, but there are soooo many options that we can never be sure.  I suppose it has the benefit of keeping us busy.

I deffo had an OMG moment when i went to the dealer the other day and they had a white R there ..... but it was the price that made me go OMG ...

In answer to the original question: absolutely yes.

Not *that* long ago I could buy a car, spend a bit on mods, enjoy it, then move it all on again a year or two later without breaking the bank too badly.
Prices and interest rates now are getting astronomical, and depreciation in the car’s early years is fierce where once they were pretty solid.

These days you order a car, place your deposit but because of the waiting time, they cannot offer a fixed price for a trade in until the month of delivery. It’s a relatively small uncertainty but still an uncertainty I would rather not have.
My other anxiety is the car not being perfect upon delivery. I’ve taken delivery of a handful of cars over the years that have needed bodywork rectification - small door ding removal or paint defect.
I no longer get that ‘sense of occasion’ when collecting new cars - this mainly down to the dealers and often poor vehicle prep.

I’ve never had what I’d call a perfect condition VW on collection; all five that I bought brand new have had build defects that IMHO should have been picked up during QC checks prior to leaving the factory or during PDI / pre-collection prep. The uneven panel gaps on some were shocking!

Poor build quality and poor dealer service means I’m very unlikely to buy another VW.

In answer to the original OMG question, when I purchased my ex-demo MK8 GTI in May '24 there was a resounding OMG! moment which probably registered on the Richter scale!
Reason? I was unloading my 2020 Porsche Macan S, a more powerful V6 vehicle with 4WD and of allegedly superior quality. I was doing this because a) the mega-expensive 4 year service was due, and b) a pair of rear tyres were imminent, but mostly c) with the car now being out of warranty, I could not shake that feeling when driving it that "if something happens to this thing, I'll have to sell a kidney". Up here at least, the cost of Porsche ownership has gone through the roof; e.g. the guts of £500 for an annual oil change! Oh, and the missus wouldn't drive the Macan - hated it.
As I've previously posted, I've always liked GTIs and have owned most marks over the years (even a Mk 1 Campaign) so I started doing some research. Eventually a suitable car came up which was less than 2 months old, and a deal was done; I ended up getting the car for free, including road tax and private plate transfer, plus a lump sum of cash.
I was totally impressed with the car during the extensive test drive (still am!), but the OMG moment came when returning back home (100 miles) in the Porsche! Hoewever, I needn't have bothered because I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. I can't fault the GTI, the performance and drivability is pretty close to the Macan S (the GTI is 1/2 tonne lighter), and I have worry free motoring for the next 3 years. (Apart from the rip off £600 annual raod tax that is!)
