8v stuttering
« on: 29 October 2003, 12:11 »
When I accelerate and reach a point of constant speed, the engine starts to stutter after about 10 seconds of going at that constand speed (ie no more acceleration). I can imagine that this will cause me problems on the motorway!

Does anyone know what is causing this?

Is this a common problem?

I had a similar problem on an old fiesta many years ago tha was caused by a knackered vacume advance, but it only missed when it had warned up.

my 8v also has a random spluter from time to time at varying RPM's and trottle actions  :o. Any ideas?

Mines a 1990 8v so  think its a digifant (I'm new to the injected VW's :-[) and it has done 166k. It was suposed to have had a full service when I brought it (1k ago) but I have booked it into my local garage next week for a full service (inc fuel filter). I will try some new leads as it has started to get a little more common and instead of a single miss , it did a couple of doulble and tripple misses on the way home from work tonight! How much is a new filer neck and how difficult is it to change? It is also missing one of the dizzy cap clips (the cap has a large zip tie holding it down on the front side) but I have got a new spring, I've just got to chisel out the remains of the old one, so that may be part of the problem?

Cheers

I thought it was the front engine mount and had that changed yesterday but it still does it!!

It seems like the engine is stuttering/hestiating at speed with very slow acceleration. I cant hear any irregular noises coming from the engine.

I have only had the car a week and I am close to pulling my hair out!!

Does anyone have any more ideas?

Will changing the ht leads affect this? surely the car would misfire right across the rev range if this was the problem?

Please help!

Try some fuel cleaner, as the injectors might be clogged.

Doug - I would probably change the basics first - Spark plugs, fuel filter etc.  Then if not cured would replace the leads - I had this problem on an old BMW and it was a nightmare until leads were changed.

Dizzie - mentioned engine mounts - can you advise if the stuttering feels more "mechanical" or "fuel starved" or even "electrical" - (Hopefully you'll know what I mean by this) :)

Also cleaning the injectors sounds a good idea too....

thanks for your reply - to be honest, the problem seems more fuel/electrical related which is leading me down the spark plugs route! Although when I reverse it feels like the dashboard is going to shake itself out, this lead me to think it may be dodgy engine mounts. I have had the front one changed but the problem is still, very much, apparent!!

Thanks again for your help - I will try your suggestions at the weekend.

Cheers
