hi , can anyone recommend a good way or a good place to sell some alloys. I've had some genuine OEM VW alloys on eBay for ages with thick virtually new tyres and not even a sniff..  any sites that might be more appropriate

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve found a car forum is a good place to sell alloys - especially an enthusiasts forum like this one. I’ve just sold a set on the Polo forum - they sold within 5 days of me advertising them. Sold two previous sets on forums too - both sets sold quickly 🙂; one set sold on the day I put them up for sale.

I’ve found the key to selling alloys is;

• Presentation; ensure alloys are cleaned up to show them at their best - that includes the reverse side of the wheels too. If wheels have tyres fitted, put some dressing on the tyres.
• Description; include all the details a buyer would need to know - e.g. size, offset, whether existing wheel bolts can be used, condition, whether genuine OEM, replicas or aftermarket, the wheel manufacturer etc. If sold with tyres, state the brand and tyre size / speed rating.
• Lots of pictures. I always include pictures of all the wheels together, then separate pictures of each wheel. I’ll include a picture of the reverse side of one of the wheels to show the important marks on the reverse side of the spokes (e.g. manufacturer’s name, size and offset, any safety certification marks, if genuine VW alloys, the part number and VW logo). If wheels are aftermarket, if possible include a picture of them on the car so potential buyers can see what they look like when they’re fitted.
• Honesty; if there’s any damage or there have been any repairs, state it in your sale details, along with pictures of the affected area(s) of damage / repairs. That includes the tyres too - state if they’ve had any punctures / puncture repairs, and also state the amount of tread depth remaining on each tyre.
• Price; be realistic when setting the price. State whether buyer would need to collect the wheels or if you’re prepared to ship them via a courier service and whether the buyer or seller is to pay the shipping charges. Don’t forget that if you ship the wheels to the buyer, you’ll need to package them up, and you may need to buy suitable packaging materials to minimise the risk of damage while they’re being shipped. Ensure packaged wheels comply with the courier’s packaging requirements - if not, they may refuse to take them. Also, if you need to buy suitable packaging materials, don’t underestimate the cost as packaging materials can be quite expensive!
