CM Wheels 18” Prets
« on: 01 October 2024, 12:37 »
VW Prets £1,900 per set
CM Prets £480 per set
Leaving aside all the stuff about warranties, insurance, etc this is a huge price gap. Basically a £1,400 contingency fund.

So can anyone tell me
1) the weight of a CM Pret 18”
2) difference in materials and construction of the two wheels
3) what guarantee does CM offer
5) does anyone have long term experience of running CM Prets

The wheel weight is 10.4KGs. I asked this before I ordered them.

How much for genuine 18 inch wheels?! And without tyres!
That is a silly price, and it looks like the genuine ones are currently on back order too.

It wasn't too long ago when VW were suppling 18 inch Pretoria wheels with tyres for under £1400

VW currently pricing 4 bare 18” Prets at £1918 but….”on offer” at £1823. I believe that excludes fitting. Increased by a couple of hundred since spring/summer.

Thats just too rich for me I think.

CM now confirm :
bare weight 10.4k (VW ones are 11.6)
6 month warranty on wheels.

I’m still wondering what the difference in materials and construction is between CM and VW Prets.

And, although I can see historical GTI Forum topics and posts on this general subject I would love to know of any “long term test” experiences of CM 18” Prets.

I emailed them yesterday to ask if they had TUV etc. approval, no response as of yet.

That seems really expensive. I know it was a good few years ago (it was in 2013), but when I bought a set of 18” VW Rotary alloys for my mk6 GTD, from memory they were just over £1k for the set of four. That price either included fitting or the dealer agreed to fit them for free; I bought the tyres from Camskill Tyres and had them delivered to my VW dealer and they fitted the tyres to the wheels and put the wheels on the car. I don’t know if they would do that now.

If you buy VW alloys via your dealer’s parts department - or any parts for that matter that cost a fair amount of money - always ask for a discount. If you don’t ask, you don’t get and there always used to be around 10% discount available, just for the asking.

And now my insurer wants a 20% loading if I switch wheels.

Maybe I will live with the Parkers. One needs refurb so that will relieve me of £120. Deep joy!

Insurance in this country is a scam. What actual difference does swapping to very similar wheels make to the risk? Practically zero.
