Oil Service
« on: 16 September 2024, 21:59 »
I bought my Golf R 7.5 2019 Plate last year in October 2023.
The Dealer serviced the car before delivery.

Since I bought the car I have only done a fraction over 5000 miles, My service light has come on it requires Oil service, I checked my oil level the other day Engine oil on the dipstick is still Golden brown instead of Dark burnt Oil.

VW quoted me £275 just for the Oil service.

Any recommendation or so this is expensive then BMW oil service.

Sounds like you’re on VW’s Fixed (time and distance) service regime which is recommended by VW for lower mileage drivers. Under the fixed service regime, the service intervals are the sooner of 9,300 miles or 12 months. It’s coming up to 12 months since your car was last serviced, hence why the service light has come on.

I’m assuming your car still has a year of its VW Approved Used warranty to run as you bought it around a year ago from a VW dealer. With that in mind, it would be worth checking out your warranty booklet to see if there are any special requirements with regard to getting the car serviced. While your car’s still under warranty, I would be inclined to get it serviced at a VW dealer as it gives VW less wriggle room with regards to rejecting a warranty claim (if you need to make one) if there’s evidence the car’s been serviced by VW.

You could consider getting your car serviced by a reputable independent VW specialist. However, to avoid potential warranty issues if you need to make a claim, you’d need to ensure they’re VAT registered, they follow VW’s service schedule and use VW genuine parts / VW approved fluids for the service and you’d get evidence of this (e.g. fully documented invoice with details and part numbers of parts / consumables used). Additionally, if your car has a digital service record rather than a service book, if using an independent VW specialist, try to find one who has access to VW’s systems and can update the digital service record for your car.

Below are VW’s recommendations (from their website) on which service regime is most appropriate, depending on vehicle usage;

Fixed servicing - Recommended if...
- You drive fewer than 9,300 miles per year
- Mainly drive in the city, or if you make frequent short journeys
- Often carry out hill climbs, towing, and driving with multiple passengers.

Flexible servicing -
For longer distance driving, we recommend a flexible service plan. Your Volkswagen's service light will tell you when you need to book your car in.

Recommended if...
- Regularly drive more than 25 miles per day
- Regularly drive long-distance
- You drive at a constant speed with a minimum vehicle load.

£275 looks like the price for the oil and inspection service which is recommended by VW at £285. The oil service alone should be £220. The inspection service is recommended on alternative years.

Any recommendation or so this is expensive then BMW oil service.

I had services done at a good Independent garage and saved hundreds on VW prices. Never had issues with Warranty claims either as Genuine VW parts were used. Since the warranty ran out I service it myself. Oil change is a 10minute job and the first Oil service saving paid for the price of the Vacuum Oil Extractor.

By the looks of this I'd certainly suit the Flexible plan, ticking all three of those boxes, so currently on the Fixed plan I'm getting the car serviced every 8-9 months. I read a lot on here about the neccessity to change the oil more frequently on the performance Golfs, even if low milages are driven. Do these plans apply to the performance Golfs?

Either service regime can be used on all VW’s including performance models. I think the default setting from the factory when cars are built is the long life / flexible service regime which will determine the frequency of service reminder messages displayed in the car.

If you have a VW service plan - either a stand alone service plan or servicing as part of VW’s all-in product - it would be worth checking the small print in the documentation as there may be a requirement for time and distance / fixed servicing. Under the all in product, it’s a two year product including two services, so to make sure both services are used, it makes sense to get the car serviced each year.
