Mk8 CS vs TCR
« on: 12 June 2023, 19:02 »
Evening all,

I've had an order for nearly 2 years for a MK8 CS and in the meantime I have been enjoying a MK7.5 GTI TCR. It has been my daily and for the last 10k miles and it has been fantastic.

The CS is due to land later this week and I am hoping for some opinions on what others in a similar position would do. My quandery be keep the CS or the TCR?

To add some more context the TCR is on 38k miles and is a real nice spec. It drives well and is a superb package for every day use. The CS is a specced car and now retails for considerably more than my agreed deal. I have been offered a good amount over my list price already hence the quandary on how to proceed.

I have a work vehicle arriving later this week so this car will turn into a weekend car rather than a daily and with this my mileage will drop considerably. If this wasn't the case I would keep the TCR as I know the mileage would mean the CS would depreciate fairly rapidly over the next few years. It would likely be 2000-3000 a year rather than 12000 a year.

I guess my question is: is the fact that the CS is brand new, fully warrantied, full service plan and priced considerably under the RRP worth the jump from the TCR with the fact that I could sell the CS and make a few £1000.

Sorry for the long post, but I have been going forwards and backwards for days now.

Thanks

Make a few quid on your CS order, mileage will even out nicely on the TCR

I'd be inclined to keep the TCR and I say that as a pretty happy MK8 owner (with no bongs ).

The 7.5 TCR is a really lovely car, probably a more special car than a new MK8 and if its going to be a weekend toy then it makes even less sense to get the new one.

Keep the TCR and sell the CS if it was me in your shoes.
Too many unknowns on the stability of the software of the mk8 and a facelift due. So wouldn't surprise me if support disappears after out of warranty in a few years.

I’d do the same. IMHO the TCR is a great car and looks different enough to the standard mk7.5 GTI to make it a bit special. Ongoing software issues would deter me from getting a mk8.

On a driving level I can't say as I've not driven a CS but I can't imagine there's much in it. Iirc, Exonian said as much in his review having owned both cars.

I'd keep the TCR, pocket some cash from the CS deal then treat the TCR to a few bits to keep the interest up. Then get yourself onto the All-in-One deal so you have another 2 years warranty (not as comprehensive as the original but still well worth having), 2 years servicing, 2 years roadside assistance and 2 MoTs for about £30 a month. No brainer imo.

I'm a happy Mk8 owner but I'd keep the TCR and finance it for a few years by selling the Mk8 on.   The TCR is more special without a doubt.

Flip the CS - you can't order them this year... going to be worth a few quid brand new.

The TCR is ok, you say its just a weekend car and you are happy with it. The TCR is a great car tbh.

Having owned both I’ve been pondering the situation in order to find a way of playing devil’s advocate to add some balance.

And…

Nah, the scales are too far tipped in one direction, keep the TCR.

Reluctantly let my lease TCR go at 3 yrs and 27000  miles, and replace with 128Ti lease, the TCR was just too deep in pockets for what would be a second car but in your scenario, with the TCR being a weekend car, with work car doing all the grunt miles, its a no brainer, the lift in experience, if any from the CS over the TCR will be marginal, the lift in money by flipping the CS would be substantial by not exchanging (how much you think you save)

The TCR was not exclusive, but it may as well have been as it was limited end of MK 7.5 run, had the full evolution of the MK 7 incorporated and at 295 BHP is as lively as anything, it was the standout send off for the MK 7x series and will say, with a stable and proven O/S with nice balance of touch/switch interaction.

Is the TCR Akrapovic? as that will add to down the road desirability, as much like the ED 35 they will command that little bit more than standard GTI and even R.

Was huge fan of my TCR and it was only sensible head that stopped me keeping it, as money in bank these days is a comfort blanket more have needed than ever to ride out these testing times,
