Odd A/C problem
« on: 24 May 2023, 20:33 »
On a long trip recently (200 miles), and on a hot day too,  the air-con in my 2016 mk7 GTI seemed to pack up.

I was getting little or no air from the vents although I could hear the blower running.  I tried the blend-door recalibration but that made no difference.

At the end of the trip I checked the aircon pipes in the engine bay - ice-cold, so perhaps that discounts gas loss. I pulled and replaced the main blower fuse and got cold air again - but the car had been stopped for 30-40 minutes by then.  The cabin air filter looked clean too.

Now, several days later, the a/c seems to be working but I haven't done another long trip yet and the weather hasn't been as hot as on the failure day.

I'll get it checked out at the next service but I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem? I'm at a loss to explain what the cause of the failure was.

Scan the car if possible with VCDS or similar to see if any fault codes are stored in the control modules. That’s a good start

Worth resetting the flaps in side the car that control the climate? Occasionally mine click by my feet and air flow evidently not as normal. It takes 30 seconds.

Thanks for the suggestions - I did the reset flaps thing when the a/c first played up and it didn't fix it. I've been away since on a long trip and the a/c tends to last about an hour, maybe 90 minutes before the airflow peters out. Stopping for a quick coffee/pit stop, even only for 15 minutes and on starting again the a/c is back in full flow. For another hour/90 minutes.

I'm wondering now if this is a simple case of low refrigerant. The car is 7 years old...

I'm not superstitious but since the first post on this subject I've had an unrepairable puncture (resulting in 2 new tyres), a faulty schrader valve causing the TPMS to go off on one of the new tyres (puncture scare!) and just the other day I got out of the car leaving the keys inside and it locked itself. It's not supposed to be able to do that!

I didn't change the battery, no. In fact, it hasn't misbehaved recently and the a/c seems to be working correctly.

Hope the dealership can diagnose yours,

Andy
