Full lock grinding/clunking sound
« on: 25 April 2023, 13:59 »
Hi all, I hope you’re well

I’m having a noise come from my front suspension, only when full lock right (or close to full lock). Unsure what it is.

Doesn’t seem to be anything stuck in brakes, I do not have a dust shield as I have a BBK. I have changed the top mount/bearings and the drop links on both sides but yet the issue still persists. The CV joint boot does not appear to be loose or leaky or anything. The car feels normal to drive, with no knocks going over bumps or anything. Literally only making this noise when full locking, and it only started about a week ago.

The noise does not happen on full lock when the car is jacked up, only when it’s on the ground

Any help/ideas would be appreciated!

Here’s a video of the noise: https://streamable.com/8zith2

Creaky suspension on the front end is a known issue for a long time, but on listening to your sound clip, its sounds like more of a grating noise than the renowned creaking noise that others have suffered. How long have you had the BBk fitted? I would concentrate on that area but obviouly very hard to diagnose such a noise online. I assume you had all the rubber seals on the front end lubricated? I know this has solved the creaking noises for other users.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I fitted the BBK privably about a year ago ish, the noise just started a few days back. And yes I lubricated with silicone grease but unfortunately no help.

This is bit of a long shot if your car has VAQ fitted: https://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=289060.msg2654264#msg2654264

Sounds like you've already checked the obvious things.

Just another thought!

When you have the front end up in the air do you by chance also have  a bottle jack that you could use to load the suspension directly under the ball joint on full lock. Once under load, it might help you to trace the source of the noise.

Good luck and please keep us posted on the outcome.

Did you manage to find a solution to this, my 2019 GTI does this, only noticed it in recent days, its 10 months into its 2 years warranty so I will probably just get it looked at VW, the car isnt idling correctly either so that needs looked ar. I do have a minor service due but £195 at VW seems steep.
