COASTING FEATURE IN ECO MODE

Help re the coasting feature in Eco Mode.

When i put the car in Eco mode i thought the coasting feature would come on straight away but it does not.

I find that i have to press the Eco button again on the touch screen for the coasting feature to start working and for the gear selector on the dash to change to E.

Am i missing something in settings?

You always have to put the car into ECO mode after restarting the car.

Even if the screen says you can in Eco when you restart the car you are actually in Normal I believe. Not until you press the Mode button and ECO again will you actually be in ECO. I believe this is the same with any other mode too.

What does eco mode do when not on the throttle that an ordinary mode doesn't? I know that the gear indicator just says "E", and it takes longer to respond to the next throttle input, but seeing as you aren't using any fuel when not on the throttle in normal mode, I'm not sure what else could be the benefit.

Pretty sure mine does not coast unless it's in ECO Mode.

Must double check that however.

I only drive it now and again as it's the wife's car!

It's my understanding that the fuel cutoff in modern engines means that you will not use any fuel when you're not on the throttle, because the wheels keep the engine turning over. You will, however, use fuel if you coast in neutral, because this can't happen any more. That's why I'm confused as to what the "Eco" mode supposedly does

I posed that exact question and argument a couple of years ago on here and someone very knowledgeable gave me the answer explaining it really well and it made sense. Forgotten it all now as ECO mode is crap and I won't use it on principle

From what I’ve read on various VAG forums, ECO mode doesn’t do much - if anything - for fuel economy gains which IMHO is what you might expect from an ECO mode, but it dulls the throttle response so you get less rapid progress. The natural tendency is then to push the accelerator pedal down further / harder to maintain the same level of progress that you would in normal mode, and by doing so, any small mpg gains are pretty much lost.

So I agree, ECO mode seems pretty pointless. I’ve never used it in my car, other than setting the engine sound to ‘eco’ in ‘individual mode’, which reduces the volume of the fake engine sound.

That's what I've always thought, you end up giving it more right foot to get the damn thing moving again.

ECO mode also does some other useless things like disabling the corner lighting and turning down the air con output.

I know its all energy use and the only place the energy comes from is petrol but I think you'd be lucky to see a quid back from doing it all year.

Isn't coasting also in Normal mode on a DSG car? It is on the Mk8....
