Roof Repair - Help
« on: 20 October 2005, 16:39 »
I have a '91 sportline cab which is leaking, only slightly as the original roof has seen better days. There are a few tiny splits in the roof above the mirrors. It's a shame I can't park in a garage (as I live in London), and I'd really ideally one day like to have a mohair roof fitted, but can't afford it for the time being, and also the added risk of it geting slashed in london.

Is there any kind of repair tape that I can buy that'll fix the roof temporarily (it's vinyl), don't want to get rid of the car, but can I avoid forking out for a new roof, or is it the case of once leaking, forever leaking, and the only soltion is a new roof?

Damn the rain!!!!!
Help!

I repaired some small splits in my roof with patches of vinyl (to match the roof) cut to size and fixed on using a decent glue and some sealant.

I eventually got round to having a mohair roof put on. Although a bit of an expense it'w well worth it. It's a shame your location should dicate what you can and cant do to your car.

i used a puncture repair kit on mine wen i had a small tear near where the press stud is..tis ok for a temporary solution..mayb worth you buying a cheapish cover just for the roof..just for on a nite time,or wenever your not using it,so wot you do use to repair the tears have that added barrier.. :undecided: you can pick em up for about £20
see if you can put sum sort of protection in ur car where the water will be dripping onto..nothing worse than having a damp/smelly car..
it is shockin that you cant modify your car without the thought of it being damaged by jealous bar stewards  i understand totally hun!!

Phil303, Where did you get the patches of vinyl, and what kind of glue did you use?

I'm starting to think that a new roof may be the only way forward, so I'm going to investigate getting a new roof. Can you guys tell me where you went for yours, whether it be vinyl or mohair? I live in London, so I guess anywhere in the south east is good. The company recommended int he VW rstoration manuila is Aldridge trimming up in Brum, which look like a professional outfit, but they're quite far away. I would have to take a day off to visit them.......

Try out these people..........

http://www.carhoodsdirect.co.uk/contact.php

£125 for vinyl or £195 for mohair.

Might be easier to buy a complete hood from ebay. It would come with the frame and glass. Else you will need to stretch over the new outter skin and use your old glass. Not an easy task.

I bought mine from these and can recommend them, not as good as the original one but not a bad copy but not the cheapest at £260 + VAT but I told them I'd been quoted £199 earlier this year by my coach trimmer and they honoured that price.

Others to try -

Just watch out for that VAT as some have it in the price of the hoods on the websites but some dont.

Also, if you are in the South Wales area some of the Newport boys (Bronze mk1 cab & sportline_velly) know someone down that end who's probably the cheapest I've heard about and I know that Bronze had his done there so you could PM him.
......now officially dubless.
